Enhancing Writing Skills Through Letter Writing

 
 
Writing a letter is a good way to practise your skills. It will help you to use
formal and informal language.
 
An informal letter 
is written to a friends or family.
A formal letter
 
may be written at work.

Letter writing
Estimated timing: 30-40 minutes
 
Find two articles that you have enjoyed reading and write a letter to a friend
summarising the news that you have read.
or
Describe the last film or TV show that you watched and loved. Persuade your friend to
watch it too.
 
You should aim to:
 
Write 1 paragraph explaining each area of news
Ask a question
Put your address on the letter and use a letter writing format
Write in an informal style

The style of formal letter is different to writing to a friend.  Think of 3
differences between formal and informal writing:

Formal letter writing
 
You can tell if a letter is formal if they use the following:
 
Formal language (no slang)
Clear paragraphs and if it is handwritten they will be indented
Signs off formally with “yours faithfully” or “yours sincerely”
Spelling and grammar has been checked

Write a letter complaining about bad customer service at a shop.
or
Write a letter to asking for someone support to a local charity cause that you are passionate about.
