Read the story of ‘Care of Henry’ by Anne Fine.

Who are the main characters? How would you describe them? Who
was your favourite character and why? What was your favourite part
and why?

Where did Henry end up staying and what did he do while he was
there. What else might he have done? What would you like to do if you
were staying?

Our main characters

Hugo
 – A young boy trying to decide who he should stay with
when his mum goes to hospital to have his baby sister.

Henry
 – A loveable dog who enjoys spending time with his best
friend, Hugo.

Mum
 – Hugo’s mum. She is about to go to hospital to have
Hugo’s baby sister.

Grandma
 – Hugo’s Grandma. She loves ‘Songs of Praise’ and
‘Antiques Road Show’ but also says she will look after Henry if
Hugo comes to stay.

This week we are going to pretend to be Henry and
we are going to write an
informal letter
to mum from
Henry explaining what we have been doing while at
Grandma’s house.

What Is an Informal Letter?

An informal letter is a letter that we send to people we know.

Types of informal letters can be:

Thank-you letters;

Postcards;

Letters to friends or family who live further away.

Example of a Letter to Friends or Family
Dear Gran,

How are you? Mum told me you haven’t been feeling very well. I have baked you
some of your favourite cakes and wondered when it would be possible for me to
come and visit?

Hope to see you soon.

Lots of love

Lesson 2 and 3
Learning Objective: To write an informal letter.

During today’s lesson you are going to be using your plan to start writing your letters.
We would like you to write your opening paragraph explaining who, what, when,
where and why. After, you can then begin your main body where you will explain what
you have been doing.
An example of an opening paragraph might be;
Dear Mummy,

I am writing to you because I miss you so much and I am so excited for you to come
home from hospital! I am having a lovely time at Grandma’s house with Hugo and I
have so much to tell you!

Remember that you need to follow your plan to make sure that the events you write
about are in the right order. Try to use
time conjunctions
to help you.
