Online Masterclass Reading Fiction English Language Paper 1. Question 1- 3. Fiction is creative writing or prose about made up characters and events. What is Fiction? Paper One English Language focuses on a fiction extract. You must be able to comment on language, form and structure. How does it link to GCSE?
What can we infer already? This extract is taken from the beginning of the novel, Girl With a Pearl Earring. The protagonist, Griet, describes the morning when she meets her future employers for the first time, for whom she will work as a maid.
Initial Reading 5Ws: Who, What, Where, When, Why?
1 Surprised. 2 Strangers would think she was calm. 3 Did not cry as a baby. 4 Wide eyes
Lexical field of domesticity Question 2 (8 marks) Look again at lines 7 to 17. How does the writer use language to describe the characters? You could write about: Words and phrases Language devices Sentence forms Similes Implications of social class. Metaphors Dashes/asides Verbs
Question 3 - (8 marks) You now need to refer to the whole source. How does the writer structure the text to interest you as a reader? You could write about: Beginning: What the writer focuses on at the beginning How this changes as the extract develops Any other structural features which interest you Middle: End: Consider what you focus on as a reader. What the character draws your attention to and why. First impressions of characters. The order of events does it build tension? The pace of the text. Any sentence forms used for effect.
