This document presents an overview of the IEEE 802.11-21/2011r0 Sensing NDP Announcement for utilizing NDP in sensing applications. It discusses the motivation behind NDP sensing, outlines the NDP Announcement frames, and explains possible sensing frame exchange sequences. The Ranging NDP Announcement for Sensing is detailed, highlighting the small changes compared to the existing protocol version. The content aims to provide insights into utilizing NDP for sensing while minimizing operational changes.

  2. December 2021 doc.: IEEE 802.11-21/2011r0 Motivation Ranging NDP defines NTB ranging, TB ranging where NDPA solicits NDP. TGbf discussed the usage of NDP for sensing. This presentation discuss the NDP Announcement for NDP sensing in order to avoid introduce less change compared with 11az Submission Slide 2 Liwen Chu et al, NXP Semiconductors

  3. December 2021 doc.: IEEE 802.11-21/2011r0 Recap: NDP Announcement in 802.11 Baseline Four types of NDP Announcement frames are defined. Each STA Info field of VHT NDP Announcement has 2-byte length. Each STA Info field of HE/EHT/Ranging NDP Announcement has 4-byte length. n x 2 or n x 4 NDP Announcement STA Info field in Ranging NDP Announcement Sounding Dialog Token Submission Slide 3 Liwen Chu et al, NXP Semiconductors

  5. December 2021 doc.: IEEE 802.11-21/2011r0 Ranging NDP Announcement for Sensing 1 Sensing NDP Announcement is derived from Ranging NDP Announcement: Reusing the NDP Announcement Variant value 01 of Ranging NDP Announcement The STA Info field (e.g. B26 and/or B31 in STA Info field) indicates the sensing frame exchange sequence is solicited, e.g. Option 1: Sensing Indication being 0 means Ranging NDP Announcement Sensing Indication being 1 means Sensing NDP Announcement The different NTB sensing frame exchange sequences are decided by whether the NDP Announcement is transmitted by AP or STA (or by ISTA or RSTA). The different NDP sensing frame exchange sequences are decided by N-STS fields. Option 2: Sensing Indication 1 and Sensing Indication 2 being 00 means Ranging NDP Announcement. Sensing Indication 1 and Sensing Indication 2 being 01 means Ranging NDP Announcement for Sensing NDPA + I2R NDP + R2I feedback Sensing Indication 1 and Sensing Indication 2 being 02 means Ranging NDP Announcement for Sensing NDPA + I2R NDP + R2I NDP + R2I feedback With this NDP Announcement, the change compared with 11az is small. 6. December 2021 doc.: IEEE 802.11-21/2011r0 Ranging NDP Announcement for Sensing 2 Sensing NDP Announcement is derived from Ranging NDP Announcement: Reusing the NDP Announcement Variant value 01 of Ranging NDP Announcement A specific STA Info field indicates the sensing frame exchange sequence is solicited, e.g. AID11 has specific value With this NDP Announcement, the change compared with 11az is more than Ranging NDP Announcement for Sensing 1. Submission Slide 6 Liwen Chu et al, NXP Semiconductors

  7. December 2021 doc.: IEEE 802.11-21/2011r0 New Subtype for Sensing NDP Announcement A new Subtype value is used for control frame extension. Instead of using B11 to B8 of Frame Control field as the Control Frame Extension for more subtype values, in frame body of control frame with the new Subtype value, the additional subtype field is defined. One value of the additional subtype field indicates the control frame is Sensing NDP Announcement. This method can avoid the usage of reserved bits in Frame Control field of Control frame, so the legacy STAs that receive the control frame will not be confused. This provide clean design. However the change compared with 11az is more than Ranging NDP Announcement for Sensing 2. Submission

  8. December 2021 doc.: IEEE 802.11-21/2011r0 Summary Various methods to design sensing NDP Announcement frame have been presented. Reuse current ranging NDP Announcement where the STA Info field for specific STA indicates whether the NDP Announcement is for sensing NDP. Reuse current ranging NDP Announcement where a specific STA Info field indicates whether the NDP Announcement is for sensing NDP. Define sensing NDP Announcement by using a new control subtype The reuse of ranging NDP Announcement for NDP sensing can decrease the change compared with 11az.
