1. LESSON 4: WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS? Street Law University of Houston Law Center Spring 2017

2. Objectives Understand where Human Rights came from and what they are. Look at real life situations and see if there are any Human Rights violations. Form your opinion using your oral and written skills for each scenario.

3. Recap What is law? Is there a law you would like to change? What are the origins of human rights? What happened during World War II? What is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ? What do governments that have adopted the UDHR have to do?

4. Recap Know Your Rights What does the American Civil Liberties Union do? What is the First Amendment? What is the Fourth Amendment? What is the Fifth Amendment? What is the Fourteenth Amendment?

5. The 30 UDHR Articles

6. Activity Assume the following events take place in the United States. Do you think there is a human right violation? If there is a human right violation, look at the UDHR and tell me which article was violated.

7. Scenarios 1) A Muslim students wears a hijab (head scarf) in class. The teacher tells her to remove it, as there is a rule against hats or other head coverings in the building.

8. Scenarios 2) A child goes to sleep hungry because the parents have no money for food.

9. Scenarios 3) A student receives a poor education and is rejected for every job for which she applies.

10. Scenarios 4) A woman is ill and is turned away from a hospital because she does not have the money to pay her medical bill.

11. Scenarios 5) A family moves to the United States from a country where it is a part of the culture for the wife to stay at home and take care of the household. The husband comes home from work and finds that his wife has not done the laundry or cooked dinner. He hits her three times, the usual method of discipline in their culture.

12. Scenarios 6) Before class starts, the professor says, You can t pray in this class.

13. Scenarios 7) A homeless man asks for money from people passing by, but people do not give him any money.

14. Scenarios 8) A Spanish-speaking student speaks Spanish to another student. The dean of students says that only English can be spoken on campus.
