  1. St Bernadette Written by Chloe and Anina

  2. Birth & Death Saint Bernadette Soubirous was born on 7thJanuary 1844 and died on 16thApril 1879, also known as Saint Bernadette of Lourdes, was the first born daughter of a miller from Lourdes (Lorda in Occitan), in the department of Hautes- Pyrenees in France, and came to be venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.

  3. Facts On 8thDecember 1933 Pope Pius XI declared Soubirous a saint of the Catholic Church. Her feast- day, initially specified as 18thFebruary the day her Lady promised to make her happy, but in the next is now observed in most places on the date of her death, 16thApril.

  4. Facts On February 11th , 1858 in Lourdes, France, Bernadette and her childhood friends went out to the fields to gather firewood. Her family was poor. While the others were playing games, Bernadette kept gathering wood. She came near a river and saw a beautiful lady dressed in blue and white, with stars around her head and roses at her feet.

  5. Facts When Bernadette told her family about the beautiful lady, they did not believe her. However, the lady kept reappearing. One day the lady told Bernadette to dig where she stood, and a fresh spring of water came bubbling out of the ground. Blind people who washed their faces in the spring could see. Sick people who washed their bodies in the water became well. The lady was Mary. Mary told Bernadette to build a great church there. This came to be known as the Shrine of Lourdes. Many miracles still happen there to this day.

  6. Feast Day Her feast day is 16thApril. 18thFebruary (France some traditional congregations). Major shrine: Convent of Saint Gilard (Espace Bernadette Soubirous Nevers) Canonized: 8thDecember 1933, Rome, by Pope Pius XI. Beatified: 14thJune 1925, Rome, by Pope Pius XI. Venerated in: Catholic Church.

  7. The visions of Mary When she was 14 years old, Bernadette experianced her first vision at the rock of Masabielle near Lourdes. Over the next six months, the same apparition of a beautiful young woman appeared to her 18 times! No one else saw or heard the vision, but there were witnesses to her reaction. The vision informed Bernadette that the beautiful woman was Mary of the Immaculate conception and instructed her to drink from the nearby spring and show penitence .

  8. Results Of Her visions After investigation, Church authorities confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions in 1862. In the 150 years since Soubirious dug up the spring, 69 cures have been verified by the Lourdes Medical Bureau as inexplicable after what the church claims are "extremely rigorous scientific and medical examinations" that failed to find any other explanation. The Lourdes Commission that examined Bernadette after the visions ran an intensive analysis on the water and found that, while it had a high mineral content, it contained nothing out of the ordinary that would account for the cures attributed to it. Bernadette said that it was faith and prayer that cured the sick: "One must have faith and pray; the water will have no virtue without faith

  9. Quotes I shall spend every moment loving. One who loves does not notice her trials; or perhaps more accurately, she is able to love them. O my Mother, to you I sacrifice all other attachments so that my heart may belong entirely to you and to my Jesus. I shall do every thing for heaven, my true home. On The Vision of the Virgin Mary Question: Was she beautiful? Oh! Oh! Yes indeed! And even more than that! so lovely that, when you have seen her once, you would willingly die to see her again!
