EVERY OTHER THURSDAY GROUPS Based on Every Other Thursday: Stories and Strategies from Successful Women Scientists by Ellen Daniell Regular 1.5-h meetings with defined structure Participants of each group have something in common Rotating leadership Meetings focuses on problem solving in a wide range of professional and personal areas Goal is for members to support each other as they find workable solutions to problems

GROUP PROCESS: TRACKING TIME 1) Facilitator asks each member to estimate how much time her work will take that day and records each time. 2) Facilitator keeps track of time and when time is up, asks if speaker needs more time. 3) If speaker asks for more time, specifies amount of time and what she wants to accomplish. 4) Time-keeping is difficult but helps participants focus and keep feedback on point and also allows time for everyone to have a turn

GROUP PROCESS: DESIRED RESPONSES 1)Facilitator asks each member to state what kind of response she wants from group: a) Practical advice b) Attentive listening while feelings are shared c) Perspectives on one s interpretation of events d) Simple reporting to get an idea of where one s work is going

GROUP PROCESS: TRUST AND HONESTY 1) Must trust Group to listen and respect issues 2) Must trust Group to hold all conversations and revelations in the strictest of confidence 3) Must trust the Strokes (positive comments) given to you by the Group 4) Must bring issues that honestly matter to you and set aside judgments of your self. 5) Must provide honest feedback
