Grammar: Lesson Six Verbs
Definition A VERB VERB shows action or state of being. running laughing thinking dream dancing
Kinds of Verbs There are three basic kinds of verbs: 1. 1. Action Action 2. 2. Linking Linking 3. 3. Helping Helping
Action Verbs AnACTION VERBis a word that expresses action. It may be made up of more than one word. The director shouts at the members of the cast. The lights are flashing above the stage. The audience arrived in time for the performance. Several singers have memorized the lyrics of a song.
Action Verbs ACTION VERBScan express physical actions, such as shout and arrive. They can also express mental activities, such as memorize and forget. ACTION VERBS Physical shout, flash, arrive, talk, applaud, act, sing, dance remember, forget, think, memorize, read, dream, appreciate Mental
Practice Identify the action verbs in each sentence. 1. Heather and Lisa heard a crashing sound. 2. They ran to the kitchen window. 3. The girls turned on the outdoor lights. 4. They looked out into the night. 5. The listened for more noise.
Practice 6. Then Heather remembered a similar noise. 7. She grabbed a flashlight. 8. The girls walked into the backyard. 9. They saw Heather s cat, Angus. 10. It had knocked over a flowerpot.
LINKING VERBS ALINKING VERB connects the subject of a sentence with a noun or an adjective in the predicate. Juanita Ortiz was the director. Ms. Ortiz is imaginative.

HELPING VERBS AHELPING VERB helps the main verb express action or make a statement. Helping Verb + Main Verb = Verb Phrase Tonya is acting in another play today. She has learned the lines for both plays.
HELPING VERBS To the tune of When the Saints Go Marching In Is Am Are Was Were Be Being Been Has Have Had Do Does Did Shall Will Should Would May Might Must Can Could These are the helping verbs!
Practice Identify the helping verb, main verb, and verb phrase in each sentence. 1. Miss McWhorter may have saved some cake for you. 2. She did wait to have some also. 3. Should she give you a large piece? 4. We could bake another cake tomorrow. 5. Will Adam wash the dishes afterwards?
Verb tenses VERB tenses let us know when the action happens. present tense I ace tests sometimes, but not often enough. past tense I aced the test yesterday. future tense I know I will ace the test tomorrow.
Practice Identify the verb in each sentence, and the tell if it is past, present, or future tense. 1. I enjoy mysteries. A: verb-enjoy tense-present 2. Johanna and Jack walked to the store. A: verb-walked tense-past 3. The store will open tomorrow at 8:00 am. A: verb-will open tense-future
