IAEA Quality Assurance Assistance in the Caribbean - V. Tsapaki, IAEA Medical Physicist
Serving as the global focal point for nuclear cooperation, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) supports Member States in utilizing nuclear science and technology for sustainable development. The Technical Cooperation Programme aims at building capacities for safe nuclear technology use. Contributions to sustainable development include areas such as food, agriculture, and radiation technology. Technical Cooperation Funds from country contributions support projects at interregional, regional, and national levels.

IAEA IAEA is an independent organization within the United Nations serving as the global focal point for nuclear cooperation worldwide SAFEGUARDS NUCLEAR APPLICATIONS It carries out the IAEA s duties and responsibilities as the world s nuclear inspectorate, supporting global efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. It assists Member States to meet their development needs through nuclear science, technology and innovation. TECHNICAL COOPERATION NUCLEAR SECURITY NUCLEAR ENERGY It aims to support the use of nuclear science and technology to address major sustainable development priorities at the national, regional and interregional level. It provides technical support on the nuclear fuel cycle and the life cycle of nuclear facilities It aims to protect people, society and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation
The Technical Cooperation Programme .aims at building, strengthening and maintaining human and institutional capacities; is the main mechanism to deliver assistance to IAEA Member States; .for the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear sciences and technology; supports priorities for sustainable national development.

Most of the Caribbean countries are providing diagnostic radiology services, and there are a few providers of radiotherapy and nuclear medicine services. RLA6081: Strengthening Human Capacities of Caribbean Countries in Radiation Medicine The problem Where necessary due to the lack of medical physicists, personnel available on-site (i.e. radiographers and technologists) perform basic quality control of radiology equipment and radiation safety and protection. The lack of national regulatory authorities has limited the reinforcement of quality control and radiation safety in medicine in the new Member States from the Caribbean.
Steps to solve the problem To improve the knowledge, skills and competencies of human resources in radiation medicine for the safe and effective diagnosis and treatment of patients in the Caribbean Member States
Participating Member States (RLA6081) Antigua and Barbuda Bahamas Barbados Belize Dominica Grenada Guyana Haiti St. Vincent and the Grenadines Jamaica (DTM) Trinidad and Tobago St. Lucia
RLA6081 Activities Training courses Procurement of Quality control and dosimetry equipment Various surveys The project was largely affected by the pandemic
Project Implementation 2018-2021 Training Courses RTC on Introduction to Quality Practices in Diagnostic Radiology for Radiographers and Radiological Technologists, March 2019,Texas, USA - 13 participants from (7) ANT, BAR, BZE, GRN, GUY, JAM, STV RTC on Radiation Protection in Medical Imaging, July 2019, Kingston, Jamaica - 15 participants from (7) ANT, BAR, BZE, GUY, JAM, STL, TRI RTC on Prevention of Accidents and Incidents in Radiotherapy, October 2019, Texas, USA - 7 participants from (5) ANT, BAR, JAM, STV, TRI RTC on Introduction to Quality Practices in Diagnostic Radiology for Radiographers and Radiological Technologists, March 2020,Texas, USA - 26 participants from (9) BAR, BLZ, DMI, GRN, GUY, JAM, SRL, STV, TRI TOTAL: 61 participants
Quality dosimetry equipment in the region on RLA6081 project control and Mulitmeters (5) Leakage meters (7) Mammography phantoms (2) Total budget: approximately 100000 Equipment: 30 pieces in total CT performanc e phantoms (2) Radiography phantoms (6) CTDI phantoms (4) PMMA plates (4)
RLA6088: Strengthening Radiation Medicine Services through Human Capacity Development, Improved Quality Assurance, Quality Control and Networking 2022-2025 To improve the quality of healthcare through: Implementation of Standardised Quality Assurance programmes Increasing the capacity of clinically trained health professionals Creation of dose assessments and management of high dose procedures Developing online and software tools to promote efficient and effective collaboration amongst healthcare professionals Implementing sustainable continuing professional development programmes.
RLA6088: Medicine Capacity Quality Assurance, Quality Control and Networking Strengthening Services Development, Radiation Human Improved through The first IAEA regional conference on quality assurance in radiation medicine
Technical Cooperation support though national projects (Examples: procurement) 1 CT scanner, 1 CT injector and 1 mammography system in St Vincent 3 radiography machines in Belize 2 mammography machines (Jamaica, 2022) 3 mammography systems in the pipeline to be delivered in 2024 (Guyana) PACS systems in 2 countries
