The passage discusses the significant role women played during the Neolithic period, where they enjoyed equality with men, invented agriculture, and contributed equally to the community. However, over time, the status of women declined as men began taking over agricultural work. The question further explores historical developments prior to 600 B.C.E. that support or challenge these assertions.

  1. CHAPTER 5 9/24/18 EXACTLY ONE MONTH TO MY 40THBIRTHDAY

  2. Take out the SAQ we did a couple weeks ago

  3. Question 1 refers to the passage below: From the point of view of the lives of women, the Neolithic period is perhaps the most important phase of prehistory...It is likely that at the end of the Paleolithic..., women enjoyed equality with men. They probably collected as much, if not more, of the food eaten by the community and derived equal status from their contribution.... [W]omen almost certainly invented agriculture as well as many of the concomitant skills and tools which go to make crop agriculture possible and profitable.... But between then and now.... The status of women has been drastically reduced, and in many areas farming has become a predominately male preserve.... As the balance of work changed from part hunting, part crop cultivation and tending a small number of animals to an economy dependent on mixed farming, so the roles and duties of women and men may have shifted... [I]t was in the later Neolithic, when men began to take over most agricultural work, that the social status of women decline. 1. Answer all parts of the question that follows. A. Identify and explain how ONE specific historical development prior to 600 B.C.E. could be used to support Ehrenberg s assertions in the passage above. B. Identify and explain how ANOTHER specific historical development prior to 600 B.C.E. could be used to support Ehrenberg s assertions in the passage above. C. Identify and explain how ONE specific historical development prior to 600 B.C.E. could be used to challenge Ehrenberg s assertions in the passage above.

  4. Bellwork: 9/25/18 1. Would you want to take a 72-hours AP exam test? What if it guaranteed you a good job for life? 2. What factors contributed to the development of patriarchy? Factors that contributed to the development of patriarchy include agriculture, warfare, and ownership of private property. 3. Look at the picture to the right, what does it tell us about motherhood in India during the Mauryan Empire? Mothers and their children have been at the core of social life everywhere and a prominent theme of many artistic traditions. This lovely statue come from the Sunga Dynasty, which flourished in northeastern India from about 185-73 B.C.E. after the collapse of the Mauryan Empire. 4. If the civil service exams were in theory open to all men, what factors might, in practice, prevent a man from succeeding on the exam? A candidate for the exam had to have a sponsor wealthy enough to support him through the years of study required to pass the exams, so the lack of such a sponsor would prevent a man from succeeding.

  5. WE WILL FINISH UP ENGINEERING AN EMPIRE: MAYA You need to continue taking your notes

  6. You will first read a series of short excerpts with different classical interpretations on why Rome fell. Use your Secondary Source Analysis Guide to work with the readings. For each excerpt, you will write a one sentence summary on the historian s argument. (All historians are arguing why the Roman Empire fell so your summary should answer that.) Make a Prediction By looking at the title and cover of Bryan Ward-Perkins book, what do you think his argument is? You will then read an interview with Bryan Ward-Perkins that summarizes the recent scholarship on the fall of Rome. Start by reading the introduction and using your Secondary Source Analysis Guide, identify which questions are being answered. After you read the first 4 questions and answers in the interview, underline claims and put the evidence defending the claim in [brackets]. I will choose a few students to share you summaries. You will then work in small groups of FIVE and answer Did the Roman Empire actually fall? Explain your answer. For Homework: write a four to five sentence answering the question above where you will cite at least TWO of the historians you encountered during today s activity. The Fall of the Roman Empire We will now complete an activity on the Fall of the Roman Empire and Secondary Source Analysis
