Increasing Collections Engagement at UoB Dusting Off Underused Electronic Resources Michael Hart and Catherine Robertson (Library Engagement Advisors)
Who we are Library Engagement Team Subject Functional in 2017 Intelligence gathering for service development First opportunity to encourage engagement with resources in a scalable, trackable, and impactful way
Collections Engagement Subgroup Representatives from different teams range of expertise All resources purchased to support specific needs (teaching, research, strategic) low use occurs over time when an academic leaves or a subject falls out of fashion Low use material targeted and usage snapshots gathered can any increases in usage be linked to promotional activity? Resources are already paid for want to extract most value Previously focused on subscription resources Use of student reps and ambassadors
Case study 1 - Events Calendar Already had a calendar of key days but wanted to expand Aim is to get users thinking about resources they might not otherwise encounter, using an event as a hook A couple of examples: - National Storytelling Week flash fiction competition - Promotion of underused music resources on International Jazz Day
Case study 2 Embedding publisher training Publishers offer training, promotional material, and support as part of the cost of the resource but we often don t use it Pandemic ended in-person roadshow can we do this online? Publisher training session from Gale Cengage for History 35 attendees Potential to expand next year, working alongside Learning Enhancement Team
Case study 3 EDI resources EDI master resource list EDI resources session for academic EDI Leads, with talks from publisher reps Social media promotion of resources for International Women in Engineering Day
Things we have learned Quality does not guarantee high usage Having a hook (e.g., an event or day) is important Make full use of publisher input already paid for! Students like peer recommendations or recommendations from their tutors relevant and reliable
Next steps Roll out more embedded publisher training both for students and Library staff Student-led tours of EDI resources Review of activity
