Understanding the Impact of Media Violence on Children

ENGLISH DAY

Does social
entertainment
promote violence?

Parents tend to believe that violent movies
might trigger their children to be violent as
well.

However,
a new study shows otherwise; it
suggests that PG-13-rated movies won’t
convert your children into criminals.

So, what do you think?

Is it possible
that entertainment violence
increases risk
 to affect one’s behavior?
To be/have more aggressiveness – both physical & in thoughts?
To demonstrate less empathy?

Is it possible
that entertainment violence can

Could entertainment violence be a

Your thoughts

Research by psychologists L. Rowell Huesmann, Leonard Eron, and others
starting in the 1980s found that children who watched many hours of violence
on television when they were in elementary school tended to show higher
levels of aggressive behavior when they became teenagers

By observing these participants into adulthood, Huesmann and Eron found
that the ones who’d watched a lot of TV violence when they were 8 years old
were more likely to be arrested and prosecuted for criminal acts as adults

Research highlights that exposure to media violence, especially among adolescents, can desensitize individuals, making real-world violence seem less impactful. However, contrary to popular belief, a recent study suggests that PG-13-rated movies do not lead to criminal behavior in children. The content of violent media influences cognitive development, with young children imitating what they see. Additionally, the digital age presents unique challenges for social interaction, particularly for children experiencing isolation due to the pandemic. Overall, while entertainment violence can affect individuals differently, it remains crucial to analyze its effects on cognitive senses and behavior.
