3. Aims and objectives To show the impact of extraordinary economic situations e.g. A country in financial crisis affects the rate of domestic violence To show how victims of violence often find excuses for their injuries and believe they must have done something wrong

4. Case details 35year old, married, lives in Athens. Due to the financial crisis she lost her job as did her husband One day a friend noticed a bruise on her face She tried to find excuses but finally confessed to her friend that she was abused by her husband The violence started after he lost his job She had not sought any help so far because she felt ashamed She thought it must be partly her own fault Situation now With her friend`s help she was able to recognize the degree of unhealthiness of the marital relationship She decided to seek professional help Today she is divorced from her husband

5. Learning points 34% of victims of domestic violence do not go to the police and 7% do not want the perpetrator to be punished Why? They feel ashamed and guilty Love for the partner and the hope he will change They fear the end of the relationship They feel it is the best for their children not to do anything They are somehow dependent on their partner They feel they will not be satisfied with the measures taken by e.g. the police ( according to an EU-study 63% were not satisfied with the reaction of the police)
