Tuesday, 16 July 2024 LESSON TITLE: What were the features of Elizabeth s Religious Settlement? 1 2 Organise these statement into two groups. Reasons why Elizabeth should have married and reasons why she shouldn t. Either label them or colour-code them Women were not considered to be physically or mentally capable of governing. It was very unusual for women to be in positions of power. Elizabeth was determined to be a Queen regnant. This is when a queen rules in her own right not with a husband. Elizabeth s sister Mary had also ruled as a regnant. Elizabeth was highly intelligent and well educated. She had learnt Greek, Latin, French and Italian. She was taught Bible stories, dancing, riding and archery. Elizabeth was not accepted as a legitimate queen. Her mother Anne Boleyn was beheaded for treason and she was declared illegitimate by Henry VIII in 1536. Many people were suspicious of having another queen after the disastrous reign of Elizabeth s half sister Mary (1553-58). Elizabeth I understood the dangerous world of court politics, where ambitious courtiers schemed and plotted to gain power. Elizabeth was ruthless- disloyalty could lead to the execution of courtiers. Elizabeth was very confident, she gave great speeches and was able to win over many of her subjects. She had a great temper and many people feared her and obeyed all orders. All members of the Church had to take the oath of supremacy under the Act of Supremacy. 8,000 priests and less important clergy did so. However only one Bishop agreed to take the oath. Elizabeth then appointed 27 new (Protestant) bishops. 2. The majority of ordinary people accepted Elizabeth s Religious Settlement and attended the Church of England services. The wording of the new Prayer Book helped this because it could be understood to mean different things by Catholics and Protestants according to their beliefs. 3. There were ways around the Elizabethan Religious Settlement for committed Catholics. For example, many attended church but then had private Catholic services in their homes. 4. Although Church courts mainly focused on Church matters, they did act in a range of minor disputes on moral issues. Examples of moral issues dealt with by the Church included marriage, sexual offences and slander (false insults). Church courts also dealt with wills and inheritance. Some lawyers didn t like that the Church began dealing with legal matters. 5. Visitations were inspections of churches and clergy by bishops to ensure that everyone took the oath of supremacy and were following the terms of the religious settlement. In this way, the Church was able to monitor other professions for the government.

This is because it named Elizabeth as the supreme governor of the Church of England, By using the word governor and not leader, it allowed the male members of the Church to not feel as inferior as having a female as their boss. The evidence to show that the Act was a success is that over 8,000 priests and less important church members took an oath of loyalty to Elizabeth. Anyone who refused was simply replaced by a loyal Protestant (Elizabeth appointed 27 new Protestant Bishops at this time). This led to many ordinary people in England accepting the Religious Settlement and attending Church of England services on Sundays. The introduction of the new prayer book heled, as it was open to interpretations and therefore could be seen differently by Catholics and Protestants. Therefore, the success of the Act of Supremacy shows that Elizabeth's Religious Settlement was a success because it was accepted by the English people and the majority of the Church.
