  1. Patient Friendly Medicine Tablet Strips (Patent Pending) Bipin Deshpande bipin@bipindeshpande.com

  2. Challenges for Patients from current Tablet Strips Which tablet is this? Very poor legibility of printed matter due to small font size or lack of adequate contrast between printed matter and background color Which tablet strip was this? Sometimes, old tablet strips are used to order new strips. But identifying used strips becomes impossible as most printed matter has been damaged due to tablet removal When do I take this? After breakfast or dinner? Patient specific instructions not available on tablets dosage, when to take, how to take Is this tablet still safe to consume? Expiry date usually unreadable due to strip crumpling or poor legibility What are its possible side effects? Limited printing space, crammed with mandatory regulatory information, leave no space for information which the patient or caretaker need

  3. Challenges for Manufacturers and Retailers Near zero brand visibility of manufacturer on tablet strip Company name, logo often not visible on strip, leading to very poor brand recall. Billions of tablet strips sold to patients, never ever communicating with the patient or the caretaker. A massive communication opportunity wasted! Patient specific instructions on tablet strip not possible no space on strip. Many variables tablet to be taken before / after breakfast, lunch, dinner ??? Little protection from counterfeiting Bar codes / QR Codes on foil, crumple easily, often preventing identification of counterfeits Strips with a single print of packing / expiry date - difficult to sell in part to more than one patient, which is often the need in poor countries Partly used strips cannot be returned to the retailer or company as use- by dates may not be visible

  6. MANUFACTURING OF PATIENT FRIENDLY TABLET STRIPS Plastic or Paper Label Sheet roll inserted between lower (forming) and upper (lidding) rolls Upper lidding overlay roll Protruding Label area for each strip Lower Foil Sheet / Roll (forming foil) with tablets in pockets/ depressions / slots

  7. Simple Manufacturing Process of Patient Friendly Tablet Strips Usually, the tablet strip has an upper foil (lidding sheet), and a lower foil (forming sheet) between which the tablets are held in depressions or pockets In the new system, a stenciled or pre-cut plastic or paper label sheet/roll is inserted in between the two foil sheets/ rolls. The label sheet extends lengthwise, widthwise or both, outside the strip foil area, providing ample labeling space The stenciled or precut sheet/roll ensures that there is no obstruction to removal of the tablet, nor does the label sheet come in contact with the tablet Alternatively, the label sheet becomes the lidding sheet and is kept broader than the lower foil, so that the extended area serves as the extended labeling area The extended label/s may have a fold for easy fitting in the secondary packing box, or a tear off for sales promotion or other purposes

  8. The New Patient Friendly Tablet Strip - Benefits to Manufacturer An additional label sheet, extending beyond the original strip size is inserted between the upper (lidding) and lower (forming) foils, significantly increasing the available print area The tablet strip can have more than one layer of extended labels, increasing the communication and branding opportunity many fold, and in multiple languages too! The additional printing space on the label sheet/s permits easy printing of security codes like barcodes and QR codes to prevent counterfeiting as well as easy scanning at the point of sale Removal of tablets from the strip does not affect the legibility of the printed matter, as the extended label is not crumpled or affected in any way

  9. Untapped gold mine for branding, communication and advertising Patients take the same tablets for Diabetes, Alzhymers, BP, every day for years together. More label space means opportunity for continuous communication with the patient Patients and retailers can be alerted about fakes, impending changes in packaging, colour or shape of tablets, to prevent confusion Patients can be encouraged to provide feedback about changes in packaging, print quality, ease of availability, side effects experienced, directly to the manufacturer Extra label space can be converted to health related communications, promotions and even advertisements to subsidize packaging costs! Advertisements could be from insurance companies, related health products, the govt, NGOs, and many others

  10. Variations in Patient Friendly Tablet Strips Label area on side of tablet strip Tear offs, for sales promos, or any other purpose

  11. New Tablet Strips with Foldable Labels for easy packaging Folded labels for ease of fitting in secondary packaging box

  12. Tablet strips with multiple labels Tablet strip with multiple layers of labels

  13. Benefits of New Tablet Strips to the Pharmacist Easy to read / scan tablet and manufacturer names, prices and other details, leading to reduced invoicing time and errors Batch and packing dates printed on extended label area, so sale of part strip possible Patient and doctor name can be added to label at point of sale Patient specific instructions for use Before/ After : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner as per doctor prescription, can be easily selected from preprinted options on the label by the pharmacist for the benefit of the patient, or even added in local language on extra blank label Massive(!!!) opportunity to eliminate retail bottling costs at pharmacies, as is the practice in the USA

  14. Benefits of the Patient Friendly Tablet Strips for patients Easy to read names of tablets on strips due to clear and large prints Patient specific instructions available on extended label on each tablet strip, and in local language as well where necessary Day date stickers provided on labels, can be removed and stuck on top of tablet, ensuring consumption of dose as per doctors prescription, eliminating need for pill- boxes Stencil / Pre cut label sheet does not obstruct tablet removal Medicine name readable even after tablets are removed as label area does not crumple. Good for partly used strips where expensive tablets do not get wasted Printed information normally printed on secondary packaging now available on the strip and extended label space itself

  15. Autistic patients, those with cognitive challenges, or the visually impaired Braille or embossed labels can be added for the benefit of the visually impaired Autistic patients, and those with cognitive challenges, will benefit greatly from labels with improved legibility
