Integrating Textual Evidence
Make quotes count You should use quotes sparingly to keep the quotes impactful that are used in the writing. In other words, use it if you absolutely have to Copy quotes correctly Keep the exactness (verbatim) of the quote Your words first Avoid beginning or ending a paragraph with a quote Remember you are the writer, the paper should be written mainly by you Keep quotes short Keep your quotes to a single sentence; if you need more information then you should paraphrase it
When using quotes, lead your reader into the quote as well as lead out. You never want to plop the quote into the sentence without any explanation Blend each of the following quotes seamlessly into a sentence that you create. You should NOT begin the quote with, Ford said, ..... . Be more creative than that!
Example: I will love the light for it shows me the way. Yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars. Og Mandino This is a stand alone quote. Embedded (Blended): Even though times may be difficult, it is important to be positive and love the light for it shows me the way [while] endur[ing] the darkness because it shows me the stars, said Mandino (44).
Excerpt from Knowless A Separate Peace During the Winter Carnival, Finny stands up on the table and dances, even with his cast. It was his wildest demonstration of himself, of himself in the kind of world he loved; it was his choreography of peace (Knowles 128).
Directions: Take a portion of this excerpt and write a sentence embedding the portion you chose. During the Winter Carnival, Finny stands up on the table and dances, even with his cast.
