  7. Was Stalin Lenins heir? Did they make Russia better or worse? Explain your answer. Information Lenin Lenin was a ruthless leader, he insisted on the complete loyalty of the members of the Bolshevik Party, and he recognised the importance of the party being highly organised. Did Lenin help Russia leave the war? Did Lenin give the people an elected government? What did Lenin do for Russia? Lenin arranged for Russia to withdraw from WW1, but this came at a huge cost to Russia. Lots of grain land and oil was lost to Germany. He initially kept his promise for an election, but when the Bolsheviks did not win enough for a majority this assembly was replaced with a Bolshevik one. Lenin allowed the Land to be divided between the peasants because he needed their support, but during the Civil War peasants were made to grow more and more crops and give them to the government so they could feed people in the towns and cities. In spite of this, food production continued to fail and in 1921 about 5 million people died from famine (starvation). Lenin realised he could not destroy capitalism completely, he allowed certain peasants to trade privately, which meant they could make a small amount of profit. Lenin believed that this was the right policy, but this shocked a lot of the Bolsheviks. Did Lenin make farming better? Did Lenin make life better for peasants? Stalin Stalin was determined to complete the communist revolution, which meant that everything would be owned and controlled by the state. Stalin wanted Russia to become self-sufficient so that they didn t have to trade with capitalist countries. Did Stalin help to improve industry (e.g. coal)? Did Stalin help to improve farming? Did Stalin make life better for Peasants? What did Stalin do for Russia? Each industry was set high targets that they had to reach within five years, they were rewarded for meeting the targets e.g. with holidays. Stalin did succeed in growing industry, for example coal production grew from 35.4 million tonnes in 1927 to 128 million tonnes in 1937. Peasants land was joined together to make collective farms, new modern machinery and tools were introduced and shared between the farmers. Good education was important, Stalin ensured that people were better educated and that they were brought up to respect Communism and Lenin. Blocks of new apartments were introduced, with space allocated according to the size of family. There were essentials but no luxuries.
