He Has Not Left You Empty Handed: A Sabbatical Prayer and Call John 17:1-23
Now they know that all things You have given to Me are from You, because the words that You gave Me, I have given them. They have received them and have known for certain that I came from You. They have believed that You sent Me. John 17:7 8 HCSB
1. Jesus clearly declared the truth of His person, the nature of His work, and the glory that He is and deserves.
Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said: Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son so that the Son may glorify You, John 17:1 HCSB
for You gave Him authority over all flesh; so He may give eternal life to all You have given Him. John 17:2 HCSB
This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and the One You have sent Jesus Christ. John 17:3 HCSB
I have glorified You on the earth by completing the work You gave Me to do. Now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence with that glory I had with You before the world existed. John 17:4 5 HCSB
May they all be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I am in You. May they also be one in Us, so the world may believe You sent Me. John 17:21 HCSB
I am in them and You are in Me. May they be made completely one, so the world may know You have sent Me and have loved them as You have loved Me. John 17:23 HCSB
One is only complete when one is made complete, in God, through loving Christ.
2. Jesus has declared the work that His Father had assigned to Him as complete.
I have revealed Your name to the men You gave Me from the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. John 17:6 HCSB
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Matthew 28:19 20 HCSB
Everything is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 2 Corinthians 5:18 HCSB
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away. Now concerning that day and hour no one knows neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son except the Father only. As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. Matthew 24:35 37 HCSB
And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. Matthew 24:14 ESV
3. Disciples know that everything that Jesus has received is from the Father.
For one will scarcely die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die Romans 5:7 ESV
But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us! Romans 5:8 HCSB
No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13 HCSB
You did not choose Me, but I chose you. I appointed you that you should go out and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you. John 15:16 HCSB
4. Jesus asks that the Father protect His disciples as He protected them.
Everything I have is Yours, and everything You have is Mine, and I have been glorified in them. John 17:10 HCSB
Jesus asks that the Father not remove His disciples from the world, but that He protect them in the world from the evil one.
tr [ - 5083] protecting - to guard, keep, to keep an eye on, watch
I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. John 17:15 ESV
Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth. Revelation 3:10 ESV
Jesus prayer: A guarding of believers from the present rather than a deliverance from the presence of tribulation.
Immediately after the tribulation of those days: The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the celestial powers will be shaken. Matthew 24:29 HCSB
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the peoples of the earth will mourn; and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Matthew 24:30 HCSB
He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other. Matthew 24:31 HCSB
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish ever! No one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father s hand. John 10:28 29 HCSB
In tribulation, you and I are, and will be, firmly in the hand of God the Father!
Just as Israel was led to safety through the Red Sea, we will also be lead by the Father, through the Son, by the Holy Spirit, to the safety of His presence.
When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. John 16:13 HCSB
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit the Father will send Him in My name will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you. John 14:26 HCSB
Why does Jesus ask for His disciples protection?
I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. John 14:18 19 ESV
In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. John 14:20 ESV
Do you not know that you are Gods temple and that God s Spirit dwells in you? 1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 1 Corinthians 6:19 ESV
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. Romans 8:11 ESV
By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you. 2 Timothy 1:14 ESV
6. Jesus asks that the Father sanctify each disciple by the truth
I say then, walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don t do what you want. Galatians 5:16 17 HCSB
All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16 HCSB
so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:17 HCSB
John answered them all, I baptize you with water, but One is coming who is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to untie the strap of His sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Luke 3:16 HCSB
