  1. Chapter 19/20 Chapter 19/20 Vocabulary Vocabulary Solar System & Universe

  2. Accretion Accretion the accumulation of matter

  3. Asteroid Asteroid a small, rocky object that orbits the sun, usually found in a band between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter

  4. Big Bang Theory Big Bang Theory the theory that all matter and energy in the universe was compressed into an extremely small volume that 10 to 20 billion years ago exploded and began to expand in all directions

  5. Black Hole Black Hole a object so massive and dense that not even light can escape its gravity

  6. Cluster Cluster a group of stars or galaxies bound by gravity

  7. Comet Comet a small body of ice, rock, and cosmic dust loosely packed together that follows an elliptical orbit and that gives off gas and dust in the form of a tail as it passes close to the sun

  8. Galaxy Galaxy a collection of stars, dust, and gas, bound together by gravity

  9. Light Light- -Year Year the distance that light travels in one year

  10. Nebula Nebula a large cloud of dust and gas in interstellar space

  11. Nebular Model Nebular Model a model for the formation of the solar system in which the sun and planets condense from a cloud (or nebula) of gas and dust

  12. Planet Planet any large body that orbits the sun or other star

  13. Red Giant Red Giant a large reddish star late in its life cycle

  14. Satellite Satellite a natural or artificial body that revolves around a planet

  15. Solar System Solar System the sun and all the planets and other bodies that travel around it

  16. Star Star a large celestial body that is composed of gas and that emits light

  17. Supernova Supernova a gigantic explosion in which a massive star collapses and throws its outer layers into space

  18. Universe Universe the sum of all space, matter, and energy that exist, that have existed in the past, and that will exist in the future

  19. White Dwarf White Dwarf a small, hot, dim star that is the left over center of an old star
