The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) is a statutory inquiry established in March 2015 covering England and Wales, led by Professor Alexis Jay. It has launched 13 investigations into various institutions including cases of child exploitation, institutional responses, and accountability. Preliminary and public hearings have been conducted to address procedural issues and gather evidence regarding historical abuse allegations.

Current Position IICSA Inquiry Current Position IICSA Inquiry Preliminary Hearings A preliminary hearing is a legal hearing which considers procedural issues relating to the conduct of future public hearings and the Inquiry s investigations. The issues that will be decided at preliminary hearings will include the timetable for public hearings, naming individuals and institutions as core participants and other procedural matters. 8 Preliminary Hearings have taken place : Janner, Rochdale, Lambeth The Anglican Church, Children Outside the UK Roman Catholic Church, Accountability & Reparation Nottinghamshire Councils (11thMay 2017) Public Hearings 4 Public Hearings taking place in 2017 Children Outside the UK (March and July 2017) Rochdale (Oct 2017) The Roman Catholic Church (Dec 2017)

  6. The Nottinghamshire Investigation (1) The Nottinghamshire Investigation (1) A significant number of allegations of historical abuse of children in the care of the Council have been made. This inquiry will investigate the extent of any institutional failures to protect children in the care of Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council from sexual abuse and exploitation, dating back to the 1940s

The Nottinghamshire Investigation (2) The Nottinghamshire Investigation (2) Significant number of actions, both criminal and civil are under way: Operation Daybreak, launched by Nottinghamshire Police in 2011. Operation Xeres, investigating allegations in North Nottinghamshire, April 2015. Operation Equinox bringing together Daybreak & Xeres, Dec 2015. Civil Claims against both the County and City Councils.

Nottinghamshire Truth Project Nottinghamshire Truth Project Professor Alexis Jay, the chairwoman of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, has said she wants victims to speak about what happened to them - and has promised they won't be judged or challenged. The Nottinghamshire Truth Project will run the 26thJune to July 21stand aims to listen to victims who suffered abuse in institutions such as children's homes and schools. The findings will not be used as evidence, rather form recommendations for the nationwide inquiry. "I believe that in Nottingham there may be thousands of adults who were sexually abused as children, miserably failed by our society and utterly betrayed by our institutions . Professor Jay

  11. Submission to Inquiry Requests to date have asked for information Nottinghamshire County Council Policies, Procedures, Reports and Internal Investigations. Information regarding allegations of sexual abuse at Children s Homes, and against Foster Carers and Employees. Specific follow-up requests relating to individual children. Individuals are named within the responses Inquiry have published a protocol on the redaction of documents Inquiry need to see all documents in complete form Relevance of documents will then be determined by the Inquiry

  12. Historical Abuse Team Service Director Children s Social Care Formal approval was given in 2015 for staffing resources to manage the Council s current response to historical abuse. HR Officer 1 FTE Group Manager 0.5 FTE Child Protection Co-ordinator 0.5 FTE Team Manager 1 FTE A number of temporary posts have been established, currently until the end of March 2018. Local Authority Designated Officer 0.5 FTE Social Worker 3 FTE Business Support 1 FTE

  13. Next steps The safety and wellbeing of children and young people in the care of Nottinghamshire County Council must be, and is, of the highest priority.
