In Acts and Corinthians, we see examples of believers receiving the Holy Spirit and being empowered to spread the gospel. The verses highlight the importance of being filled with the Holy Spirit to strengthen and equip Christians for spiritual battles. Ephesians emphasizes wearing the armor of God and relying on the power of the Spirit through prayer to face challenges. Through these teachings, Christians are guided on seeking the baptism of the Holy Spirit for empowerment and divine strength in their faith journey.

  1. Be Filled with the Holy Spirit seeking the Baptism of the Holy Spirit 1/28/24

  2. Acts 19:1-6 19 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers.[a] 2 Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? he asked them. No, they replied, we haven t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. 3 Then what baptism did you experience? he asked. And they replied, The baptism of John. 4Paul said, John s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus. 5As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.6Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues[b]and prophesied.7There were about twelve men in all.

  3. 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 2 When I first came to you, dear brothers and sisters,[a]I didn t use lofty words and impressive wisdom to tell you God s secret plan.[b] 2For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified.3I came to you in weakness timid and trembling.4And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit.5I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.

  5. God Give Christians the strength to fight Ephesians 6:10 10 Be strong with the Lord s strength. Put on the whole armor of God Ephesians 6:11-17 Belt of truth, Breastplate of righteousness, Shoes of the gospel of peace, Helmet of salvation, Shield of faith, and the Sword of the Spirit. If you are looking for the strength to carry all this armor daily, don t overlook the very next verse (included in our armory): 18 Praying at all times in the Spirit [See Romans 8:26; 1 Corinthians 14:14]

  6. Luke 11 (the friend asking for bread at midnight ) 8But I tell you this though he won t do it for friendship s sake, if you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give you whatever you need because of your shameless persistence.[d] 9 And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.10For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

  7. Remember. God knows how to give good gifts to His children. Luke 11:13So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.

  8. Ask yourself: What about the Holy Spirit and the gifts might you be resistant to? Are there gifts you just automatically assume are for someone else? Have your asked for, sought after the gifts of the Holy Spirit and been open to receiving them?

  9. The third person of the trinity, the person of the Holy Spirit is able to feel Joy Luke 10:21 1At that same time Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, Outrage Hebrews 10:29 29Just think how much worse the punishment will be for those who have trampled on the Son of God, and have treated the blood of the covenant, which made us holy, as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings God s mercy to us. [ESV outraged the Spirit of grace ] Sorrow/grief Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit ; In both Isaiah 63:9 10 and Ephesians 4:30, grieving the Holy Spirit is associated with God s people having an inappropriate response to His redemption. made bitter (Psalm 106:33, ESV)

  10. Do not grieve or quench/stifle the Holy Spirit Grieving the Holy Spirit is similar to quenching the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19) in that both negatively impact the believer, the church, and the world. Because in that moment the individual is opposing the Spirit s desire to reveal Himself as He wants to, through the fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22 23); or through suppressing the empowering/use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12).

  11. It is possible for us to grieve the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:30 30And do not bring sorrow to God s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own,[a]guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. 31Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.

  12. Beware of hyper-analysis of the Holy Spirit s Presence Hyper-analysis of something that cannot be measured shifts your attention from seeking His presence and submitting to Him to your own subjective appraisal. Proverbs 3:5-6. 5Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Hyper-analysis may be rooted in fear, pride, doubt/lack of trust, and is a hinderance yielding to the Spirit and stepping out in faith.

  13. How to then take a leap of faith?: Yielding is the catalyst in receiving God Yielding is an act of surrender and cooperation to the Holy Spirit Yielding is active not passive The leap of faith is actively yielding your speech to the direction of the Holy Spirit.

  14. Acts 2:38-39 38Peter replied, Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.39This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away[a] all who have been called by the Lord our God.

  15. Make Room for Him Make Room for Him 1. Repent 2. Renounce 3. Replace

  16. How do I start? How do I receive? Here are three 3 steps: 1. Pursue Jesus 2. The Holy Spirit will then fall upon you. 3. You must then cooperate (partner) with the Spirit by beginning to speak as He enables you.

  17. How do I receive? 1. Pursue Jesus. Obediently pursue Jesus. Acts 2 waiting, worshiping, obeying (see also Luke 24:53) Acts 10 the gentiles A Caesarean named Cornelius saw a vision of an angel of the Lord telling him to send for Peter. He obeyed and sent met to retrieve him. Acts 19 New Christians grew hungry to grow in their relationship with Jesus. The disciples, upon hearing Paul laid hands on them, and the Holy Spirit came upon them

  18. How do I receive? 2. The Holy Spirit will then fall upon you. As you seek, He responds. You Seek 2 Chronicles 7:14 Seek His face (Humble yourself and repent) Hebrews 11:6 He rewards those who seek Him James 4:8 Come near to God and He will come near to you 1 John 1:9 Confession and repentance leads to forgiveness and purification Revelation 3:20 Jesus knocks listen and open the door

  19. How do I receive? (you seek, He responds) He Responds Acts 2:2-3 Spirit came like a wind; tongues of fire Acts 10:44 hearers of the word filled with the Holy Spirit Acts 19:6a Paul placed his hands on them, Spirit came upon them 1 Cor 3:16 Every believer is the temple Romans 8:9 The spirit lives inside the believer (baptism is different then salvation) Acts 1:8 you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you

  20. How do I receive? 3. You must cooperate (partner) with the Spirit by beginning to speak as he enables you (a leap of faith and obedience). Acts 2:4 Speak as the Spirit gives utterance [step out in faith, as your feel the Holy Spirit start/take the leap] Acts 10:46 Spirit fell on gentiles, who spoke in tongues [you don t have to be a super-saint ] Acts 19:6 Laying on of hands to receive the Holy Spirit Acts 2:17 In the last days I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh

  22. There are two paths: First path: What is our natural response to the Holy Spirit? We resist Him. Our default response is trying to stay in control Your control and dignity are still intact, as you are not doing anything perceived to be risky. Stay the same. Don t move. No change other than risk furthering stagnation, frustration/burnout, and growing cold in your relationship with the Lord. Example: If we stay in the first path while we worship, and the Holy Spirit comes, but all we do is continue in what we naturally do and say (doing and saying what we did before he came upon us). Everything stays comfortable What do you think will likely happy? Probably Nothing, because we are not cooperating with the Holy Spirit

  23. The Second Path (the correct path): Take a leap of faith. Receiving something new requires a new action. This will take you far away from your comfort zone. This way is chosen when you want more of God and decide to step out in faith and trust Him. His promises are always true. You will be safe! If you choose to take the leap of faith, you will most likely feel self- conscious and vulnerable. This proves that your dignity and pride are becoming yielded. Don t worry though, Jesus can t wait to baptize you in the Holy Spirit!

  24. How do I start? How do I receive? Here are three 3 steps: 1. Pursue Jesus 2. The Holy Spirit will then fall upon you. 3. You must then cooperate (partner) with the Spirit-- beginning to speak as He enables you.

  25. Do you want more? Leap

  26. If you are open to the Holy Spirit, and wish to receive prayer to be filled, the front is now open.
