Schools of Sanctuary Award: Application and Submission Guidance

1. Schools of Sanctuary Award Application and Submission Guidance

2. What is the Schools of Sanctuary Award? The Schools of Sanctuary Award is given by the City of Sanctuary movement to schools that have consistently put the sanctuary principles into practice. These principles are: Learn: Learn about what it means to be seeking sanctuary and be actively involved in awareness raising (eg talks and training for students and staff, celebrating Refugee Week). Embed: Take positive action to make welcoming and inclusion part of the values of THE school, to support sanctuary seekers and refugees, and to include them in your activities (eg displays, school procedures, fundraising). Share: Share your vision and achievements with parents and governors, your cluster, and the wider Schools of Sanctuary network (eg post lesson plans online, take part in events). 3. Why become a school of sanctuary? Working towards becoming a School of Sanctuary also provides schools with a powerful focus for possible development in areas such as: Increasing pupil voice and promoting active & engaged citizenship Meeting the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 Imaginative re-engagement with required curriculum areas such literacy, language arts, geography, history, humanities Engaging families and strengthening the school s role in the local community Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural education and British Values Improving the provision of English as an additional language in school Building a school culture that reduces intolerance, hate speech and bullying Helping improve pupil outcomes and attendance students that feel safe and included will be more likely to attend schools Building an inclusive and supportive school community Promoting well-being & community cohesion by building empathetic school environments Manifesto commitment to achieve City of Sanctuary status

4. How do Schools attain the award? A school can attain an award if they can provide evidence that they have integrated the three core processes and follow the steps of application below: Contact your local group or a national officer if there is not a local group near you. They will be able to discuss your application and answer any questions you might have. Pledge your commitment to work towards the values and principles of the City of Sanctuary charter by signing up as a Supporting Organisation. We also encourage you to sign up to the monthly national newsletter Produce a plan (with support of local group) using the process of LEARN, EMBED, SHARE. Include how you plan to incorporate the CoS network principles (where applicable) within the organisation and what can be appropriately embedded within your context. Some Streams of Sanctuary have audit assessment tools to help your planning ( eg Schools of Sanctuary) Submit a written application for an award using the Sanctuary Awards Application form. Please forward the application to your nearest CoS local group or the relevant Regional Coordinator. Where there is no local group or local streams lead City of Sanctuary UK will be responsible for the award process (please note that because of capacity there are application deadlines).

5. The 3 Principles

6. LEARN The LEARN element looks for examples of work which signals the commitment of schools to learn about what it means to be seeking sanctuary. To receive a School of Sanctuary award, a school must meet these two Learn minimum criteria: Criterion 1: Criterion 2: Training and education opportunities are provided for school staff & management on refugee, asylum and migration issues. Evidence of refugee/asylum/migration learning activities are included into school life and at least one example in the curriculum, across the key stages.

7. EMBED Embedding means that institutions are taking positive action to implement welcome, safety and inclusion throughout the school, across its entire community. To receive a School of Sanctuary award, a school must meet these three Embed minimum criteria: Criterion 1: Criterion 2: Criterion 2: The School must demonstrate how it has embedded the concept of welcome and inclusion in the school. Commitment to supporting age- appropriate active pupil voice on sanctuary and welcome/welcoming activities in the school. Recognition of and participation in the annual Refugee Week or other annual/regular celebratory events which highlight the contribution of people seeking sanctuary and migrants to the UK. This should show how the school will continue to develop and sustain a culture of welcome beyond the award and ideally, this should be linked to the School s Improvement/Development Plan and made clear in policy documents and induction processes. For example, this might mean ensuring that your School Council or other student- led groups are actively involved in the process of working towards recognition.

8. SHARE City of Sanctuary will be seeking evidence that the school is seeking to share its commitment with the wider community reaching parents, local organisations about the school s efforts. To receive a School of Sanctuary award, a school must meet these three Share minimum criteria: Criterion 1: Criterion 2: Criterion 2: A public commitment to the City of Sanctuary vision of welcome, including the endorsement of City of Sanctuary charter which can be done via signing the City of Sanctuary organisation pledge. Commitment to on-going engagement with the Schools of Sanctuary stream. The school publicly highlights its activities in support of welcome and inclusion. This may include sharing resources, ideas and achievements via the school s website or the national City of Sanctuary website, and/or with other local/regional schools. This can include social media/website posts, school newsletter updates or attending regional activities or meetings. This pledge should be included on the school s website and in a public space in the school.
