  1. Lord Dunmores War and The American Revolution in West Virginia

  2. Directions Use laminated West Virginia road maps and dry/wet erase markers to complete the activity. Read the description and label when it is asked to. Each map needs a title. At the top of the map write Lord Dunmore s War and the American Revolution Make a large rectangle in the bottom right hand corner of the map and label it Key .

  3. Proclamation of 1763 After the French and Indian War, King George III of Great Britain issued the Proclamation of 1763 which forbade settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains. The purpose of the proclamation was to appease the Native Americans in the region by giving them their land and protect the colonists in the region from an Indian uprising. However, this only angered settlers by taking away lands they thought they deserved for fighting in the French and Indian War. This decree was nullified by the signing of the Treaty of Fort Stanwix and Treaty of Hard Labor.

  4. Settling of the land In 1768 Zackquill Morgan, son of Morgan Morgan, settled in present day Morgantown. Near Morgantown draw a ________ and title it ZACKQUILL MORGAN 1768. Also in 1768, John Simpson settled on Elk Creek near Clarksburg. Near Clarksburg draw a ________ and label it JOHN SIMPSON 1768. In 1769, the Zane family settled in what became Wheeling on the Ohio River. Near Wheeling draw a ________ and label it ZANE FAMILY 1769. Add the ________ symbol to the KEY and label it Settlements

  5. Lord Dunmores War With war with the Indian s inevitable, the settlers asked Michael Cresap to lead them in an attack. Cresap agreed to lead an attack on a surprise raid at Captina Creek. South of Moundsville near Natrium, draw a ________ and label it CRESAP ATTACK 1774- START OF LORD DUNMORE S WAR. Add the ___________ symbol to the key and label it Battles .

  6. Yellow Creek Massacre Around the time of the Cresap Attack, one of the worst atrocities against the Native Americans occurred in modern day Hancock County. Chief Logan of the Mingo tribe was friendly to the settlers in the region. However, members of Chief Logan s family were murdered while purchasing rum at a tavern near Weirton by a group of settlers led by Daniel Greathouse. This attack is called the Yellow Creek Massacre due to Chief Logan living on Yellow Creek in Ohio. South of Weirton draw a _________ and label it Yellow Creek Massacre.

  7. Battle of Point Pleasant After many small skirmishes along the Ohio River, Virginia Governor Lord Dunmore decided to completely destroy the power of the Indians in the West. The only major battle occurred in Point Pleasant where the Ohio River meets the Kanawha River. Colonel Andrew Lewis defeated a native American force led by Chief Cornstalk. At Point Pleasant draw a _________ and label it Battle of Point Pleasant

  8. The American Revolution Only 6 months after the Battle of Point Pleasant, Americans citizens and British soldiers fought near Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. Western Virginians had to chose which side to be on. About 1/3 favored revolution, 1/3 were Loyalists or Tories, the remaining 1/3 were neutral. Most of the clashes in western Virginia were between colonists and the Native American allies of Britain.

  9. Colonial Forts After the outbreak of the American Revolution, many forts were built in what is now West Virginia. Draw the __________ symbol and label the following locations. Arbuckles Fort- north of Alderson in Greenbrier County Fort Buttermilk- north of Moorefield in Hardy County Fort Cocke- on Patterson's creek southeast of Keyser in Mineral County Fort Donally- near Williamsburg in Greenbrier County Fort Randolph- at Point Pleasant in Mason County Fort Tackett- at St. Albans in Kanawha County Fort Henry- at Wheeling in Ohio County Add the ___________ symbol to the key and label it Forts .

  10. First Battle of Fort Henry Fort Henry in Wheeling was the site of a siege on September 1, 1777. Two major events occurred while the fort was under siege. The first involved Samuel McColluch who escaped captivity by guiding his horse over a cliff. The second involved a company of Hampshire county militia that was ambushed on their way back to Fort Henry. In Wheeling draw the symbol _______ and label it 1777.

  11. Attack on Fort Donnally After Chief Cornstalk was murdered at Fort Randolph, Native Americans attacked Fort Donnally. Thanks to the efforts of Philip Hammond and a slave named Dick Pointer, the fort was able to hold off an attack of Native Americans. At Fort Donnally draw the ____________ symbol and write 1778.

  12. Final Attack on Fort Henry In September 1782, Fort Henry was attacked by British soldiers and Native Americans. The siege lasted 2 days but is best remembered because of the bravery of a young girl named Elizabeth "Betty" Zane. Betty ran through fire to get gunpowder at her brother's house. Thanks to her efforts, the fort had plenty of gunpowder and was able to allow the defenders to succeed in drive off the attackers. This attack is sometimes called the last battle of the American Revolution. At Fort Henry next to the battle symbol, write 1782.
