The endocrine system, essential for bodily functions and growth, consists of key parts such as the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, and more. It helps maintain homeostasis and can be affected by environmental factors like drugs and stress, leading to conditions such as Cushing syndrome. Diseases like tumors and birth defects can also impact its function.

  1. Endocrine System! By: Aaron Dasrath, Charlotte Levin, Socrates Patestas

  2. Endocrine System: MAIN FUNCTION: The endocrine system produces hormones which are needed for proper bodily functions and growth.

  3. Main parts/vocabulary: 1. Hypothalamus= a white small region of the brain, it controls many vital bodily functions, including hunger, thirst, body temperature, and hormone secretion. 2. Pituitary gland= a link between the nervous and endocrine systems and releases many hormones that affect growth, sexual development, metabolism, and human reproduction. 3. Thymus gland= closely associated with the immune system than with the endocrine system. Thymus plays a major role in training and developing white blood cells. 4. Thyroid gland= controls the rate at which the body produces energy from nutrients. 5. Parathyroid gland= control the level of calcium in the blood. 6. Adrenal gland= secretes hormones which have important effects on the way in which energy is stored and food is used, on chemicals in the blood, and on characteristics such as hairiness and body shape. 7. Pancreas= serves as two glands in one, digestive exocrine gland and hormone producing endocrine gland. As the exocrine gland, the pancreas secretes enzymes to break down the proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids in food. As an endocrine gland it secretes hormones, insulin,

  4. The Endocrine system is used by the body to help maintain homeostasis.

  5. Other Body Systems that affect the Endocrine System - There are 2 main organs in the human body that affect the Endocrine System. The organs are: A)Kidneys B)Liver - The kidneys are the main organs that break down hormones for the human body.

  6. Diseases and Conditions of the Endocrine System - Some diseases & conditions that you can get from the endocrine System are: A)Birth defects B)Cancerous and noncancerous tumors - In general, abnormal endocrine functions creates a hormone imbalance typified by too much or too little of a hormone, or a problem breaking down the hormone.

  7. Effects of outside/Environmental Factors on the systems: - Drugs disrupt with the production of hormones and cause cushing syndrome. - Cushing syndrome:Occurs when a child takes prednisone for a disease like lupus and in the future get growth. failure, muscle weakness, and high blood pressure. - Stress causes the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. If the body doesn t produce cortisol the endocrine system fails and it can cause life threatening problems.

  8. 3 Fun Facts about the Endocrine System 1)Alcohol has a widespread effects on the Endocrine System. 2)Dogs were once an important part of Endocrine research. 3)Stress kicks the Endocrine System into high gear.
