  2. ABOUT THE FESTIVAL Started in 1969 by Roger L. Stevens, the Kennedy Center's founding chairman, the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) is a national theater program involving 20,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide annually. For over 50 years, the organization has served as a catalyst in improving the quality of college theater in the United States. KCACTF has grown into a network of more than 700 academic institutions throughout the country.

GOALS to encourage, recognize, and celebrate the finest and most diverse work produced in university and college theater programs; to provide opportunities for participants to develop their theater skills and insight; and achieve professionalism; to improve the quality of college and university theater in America; to encourage colleges and universities to give distinguished productions of new plays, especially those written by students; the classics, revitalized or newly conceived; and experimental works. In January and February of each year, regional festivals showcase the finest of each region's entered productions and offer a wide range of activities, including workshops, symposia, and regional-level scholarship and award programs. The Cottey Theatre Department took 8 students to Sioux Falls, SD.

  4. THE IRENE RYAN ACTING SCHOLARSHIP The Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships provide recognition, honor, and financial assistance to outstanding student performers wishing to pursue further education. The Irene Ryan Foundation awards sixteen regional and two national scholarships annually. One nominee and partner from every region will be invited to the national festival and the nominee will receive a $500 scholarship. **The Cottey Theatre Department took 6 students to participate in the Irene Ryan Auditions. Three students were nominated from their performances in The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls and 3 partners were selected. These students were coached by Professor Laura Chaney to perform two contrasting scenes and one monologue.

DESIGN EXPO The Expo provides student designers, technicians, managers, and dramaturges' the opportunity to showcase their work at the regional festival and receive feedback from professionals working in the field. Awards are presented for designs and other allied design and technology appraised on the basis of quality, effectiveness, originality, and visual presentation techniques. Each student entered in the Expo will receive a response to their entry from professionals specializing in their respective field.

AWARDS Anna Borgerding was awarded The Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas Award For Excellence in Technology and Design The Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas has partnered with KCACTF to award students from each region a one-week master class in the area of their choice. SILV classes may include Computer Drafting, Computer Modeling, Rigging, Automation, Props & SFX, Sound, Makeup & Masks, Wigs, Lighting Technology, Patterning, Projections & Video, and Moving Lights. Each award includes a full tuition grant, housing, daily breakfast and lunch. Transportation is not included.

Meeting with P.E.O.s In addition to the generosity of The Serenbetz Institute, we have a wonderful sponsor who helps support our trips to The American College Theater Festival, Mrs. Ann Brierly Platt. She spoke to the local Sioux Falls P.E.O. chapters about our trip to Sioux Falls and arranged for us to have dinner together. We were honored to have the opportunity to have a private dinner with Mrs. Platt to thank her for her continued support.

  18. Student Workshops/ Panel Discussions Students and faculty have the opportunity to participate in a large array of workshops. These workshops help develop acting, design, stage management, dance, and musical theatre skills. In addition, faculty and guest theatre practitioners speak on panels about topics of importance to the theatre industry. Catherine and Stephany participate in a costume design workshop.

  19. Dr. Andrews and Professor Laura Chaney served on a panel discussion : Women as Arts Leaders: Lifting each other up . January 2020 The professors were personally invited by the festival hosts because of their commitment to Women s education and leadership in theatre.

  20. COLLEGE FAIR Dr. Andrews and professor Chaney participated in a recruitment event at the College Fair during the festival. The faculty reached out to transfer students at Community College s who had an interest in a Secondary Ed Degree.

  21. EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES The faculty and students are grateful to the College, Serenbetz Institute and Mrs. Ann Brierly Platt for the yearly financial contributions and enthusiastic support of Cottey Theatre participating in The American College Theater Festival. It is hard to summarize how much we learn and grow from the experience. We attend theatre performances Participate in Professional Workshops and Panel discussions Students receive feedback on acting, design, stage management, voice and dance from professionals working in the industry. We meet other faculty and students who share a common interest. We discuss how we can serve as good citizens within our community. Looking for ways to be more inclusive of others and welcoming. We Grow both Intellectually and Personally!
