COMMAS, COLONS & SEMICOLONS VOCAB UNIT #3
COMMAS Used with a conjunction (and, but, or, etc) to separate independent clauses (complete sentences) Example: His ideas were widely misunderstood, and so he fell into depression. Signify a pause in the sentence Example: Annie shuffled slowly, her feet heavy with despair.
COMMAS Sometimes used for emphasis Example: Savannah was, to say the least, an impressive writer. Used between items in a list Example: She asked him to pick up eggs, bread, and carrots from the grocery store. Used to set off a long introductory element from the rest of the sentence Example: On the last Saturday of May, the entire senior class will gather for graduation.
COMMA PRACTICE We came across a small and possibly sick wild cat. My sister Noelle will be taking me to the movies tonight. She has been to Arizona California and Colorado all in one week.
COLONS Used to present a list if there are no other introductory phrases or words Example: I brought home all of the items: sugar, flour, and eggs. Used to introduce an elaboration (here s what I mean ) Example: I ve decided to take hockey lessons: the ice skating coach says I have a natural talent and has arranged for weekly sessions.
SEMICOLONS Separates two independent clauses (complete sentences) Example: Katie woke up; she went to volleyball practice.
COLON & SEMICOLON PRACTICE The host made an announcement You are all staying for dinner. I am excited for the trip however, I am nervous about the flight. I want the following items apples, bananas, and lemons. The war is imminent the armies are ready.
