Sweet memories from Stavros Guy Wormser Vice-Pr sident of the French Physical Society
The early years I first met Stavros in 1976, almost 50 years ago, in the DEA de Physique th orique in Jussieu We both had to take care of Olga, but not at the same time! I worked again with Stavros in DELPHI between 1988 and 1993, when we were chasing Susy (together this time)
Passing keys to each other I worked as IN2P3 deputy director for particle physics Quarks and Leptons from Oct 1999 to December 2003. In January 2002, Michel Spiro resigned as IN2P3 Deputy Director for Astroparticles. I took over the interim while Jean-Jacques Aubert was looking for the best person He picked up Stavros in April and Stavros took office in June 2002 I therefore had the delightful pleasure to hand him the keys of the IN2P3 astroparticle portfolio. It was so impressive to see him take extremely fast such an important role in the national and international scene
Sifnos I sent Stavros a casual message asking him for some tips for a trip I was planning to Athens one week before departure (2005 april 13) His answer was to give me the keys of his house in the Sifnos island where my wife and I sent 3 fantastic days We could really feel Sifnos was indeed Stavros battery charger , the source of his inspiration and its energy This little story demonstrates that Stavros was not only extremely brilliant but also extremely generous Everybody is amazed of Stavros incredible culture and his love for art and philosophy. We now understand why: Stavros was Greek!
Interacting with Stavros in all kinds of positions In this 50 years period, I had the infinite pleasure to interact with Stavros in all kinds of respective configurations : As a little brother (1976-1979) As a colleague in the trenches (1988-1992) As high level managers on an equal footing (2002-2003) and as a coach for a few months in that period As a lab director while Stavros was IN2P3 deputy director (2005-2011) As an outreach organiser when Stavros was labo director (2015-2017) As a conference organizer when Stavros was APPEC chair Etc I enjoyed them all!!!! We lost an exceptional colleague and a dearest friend
