How The Volcanic Eruption Turned People Into Stone - Pompeii The town of Pompeii was a pleasant place to live for ancient Romans, but all that changed when Mount Vesuvius let out a violent eruption and wiped out the entire town, but leaving behind some creepy artifacts of the former citizens. An example of my plan What will your title be? Pompeii Citizens Turn to Stone! What happened? Without any warning, Pompeii erupted causing many deaths also people were turned into stone. When did it happen? Early one afternoon, in AD 79, unexpectedly the volcano erupted. Where was it located? This happened in Italy, in the city of Pompeii under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Why did it happen? The volcano had however many people died as they were not expecting it. Who was affected? All the citizens were affected and unfortunately many people died. How did people react? The people were surprised. They was cautious in the streets, children could be heard screaming
Where? 5 Ws When? Eg: A terrifying, unexpected explosion occured at Mount Vesuvius on 24th August AD79. What? Eg:Early one afternoon, to everyone's surprise, Mount Vesuvius erupted, killing many people, who also turned into stone. Who? Eg:As a result of the eruption, people could be seen running and screaming in the foggy streets. Sadly, MILLIONS of people turned into stone! This was a great catastrophe! How?
Descriptive language Eg: As you walked through the busy, wide streets,you could see children playing happily before the eruption. Through is the preposition and wide and busy describes the streets. Eg: The famous, bustling city was destroyed to a pile of rubble in a matter of hours. The words famous and bustling describe the city. The adverbial a matter of horus gives more detail. Eg: The busy city, which had its own grand Amphitheatre, was destroyed within a few short hours. The word busy describes the city with a relative clause for more information.
Quotations Quotations tell us what has been said and who has said it. They are used in newspapers to give the perspective of eyewitnesses. It could be described as an umbrella pond, it rose to a great height then split off into branches Marcus explained to our reporter. Reporting clause comes after the speech. Sadly Marcus recalled, I could hear people screaming, infants crying, people feeling their way through the darkness, looking for their lost relatives and praying to their gods. Reporting clause comes before the speech. I could hear people screaming, infants crying Marcus told us There were people feeling their way through the darkness, looking for their lost relatives and praying to their gods. This is split speech. The reporting clause is in the middle of the speech.
Subordinate Clauses Unfortunately, when the volcano erupted, the people had nowhere to run to, which was extremely frightening. As a result of the eruption, toxic gas was thrown in the air choking many inhabitants as it fell upon the city. When it all calmed down and all its inhabitants destroyed, sadly robbers arrived on the scene, however this was no easy robbery!
Relative Clauses The eruption, which killed many people, was unexpected and furious. The relative clause is embedded. The volcano, unlike anything ever seen before, quickly and efficently destroyed the city. The relative clause is embedded and the relative pronoun is omitted. Mount Vesuvius, the once peaceful volcano towering over Pompeii, erupted on August 24th AD79 a day which will go down in history. Am embedded relative clause with omitted pronoun is used as is a relative clause at the end.
Formal punctuation-(parenthesis) Brackets are used to add additional information. Dashes can be used to add information. Commas are used to mark clauses and to separate ideas in a list. At around 12pm another-considerably more powerful and destructive- earthquake struck the city. Dashes have been used to add extra detail about the earthquake. An uneasy feeling descended upon the city when a cloud (made of ash and rock) began to speedily move towards the city. Brackets have been used to add more detail about the cloud. Stylax, a resident in the city for 20 years, began to feel uneasy around 12pm after he saw an ominous cloud heading towards the city. Commas and a relative clause have been used to tell us about Stylax.
