You, a 25-year-old woman in 1700s England, seek treatment for persistent head pain. You face a choice between a formal practitioner or an informal one. Opting for a formal practitioner leads you to an apothecary advertising a cure-all elixir. After ingesting the medicine, you have a severe reaction and wake up a week later. A second treatment or the end of the story awaits you.

Situation You are a 25 year old woman living in the 1700 s. You are currently living in England, and have been married to a textile merchant for 4 years. One morning, you woke up with pain in your head. After 1 week, the pain has not improved. You decide to seek medical treatment, and begin looking. Next
Choice After asking around, you hear a few options. Some practitioners have been licensed by universities, the King, or other regulating offices and some (possibly cheaper options) have no official certifications. Click your choice: Formal practitioner Informal practitioner
formal You have chosen to see a formal practitioner for your head pain. You aren t sure the best place to go, so you ask around in your community. You hear a story from a friend and also see an advertisement in the town square. Patient Story Advertisement
This advertisement was found in the town square. It is advertising a medical elixir to cure all manner of ailments. It is only found at the Apothecary located at the St paul s churchyard in Watling, London. next

Apothecary You visit the apothecary you saw in the advertisement. You tell the owner of the shop that you have a headache. He instructs his assistant to grind some dried plants together, and add some colorful liquid. He hands you a glass bottle. Accept Second Opinion
Apothecary cure You accept the bottle. Upon returning home, you take the medicine as instructed. However, you immediately start choking, collapse, and pass out. You have reacted negatively to this medicine and wake up 1 week later. You can pursue other treatment, or finish. Another Treatment Finish
I heard you are looking for a doctor? I recently went to dr. John allen of Blackfriar london, who I heard about from my midwife friend. I had a fever and a stomach ache for two weeks when i visited him. He asked questions about my diet, lifestyle, and environment. After observation and assessing my constitution, he recommended I take the new world purging plant Jalap. He said my stomach ache was caused by a buildup of fluid in my stomach, and removing it would fix the pain. He was very knowledgeable, and works with a respected guild. I recommend him! next

Surgeon You visit the surgeon you heard about from your friend. You tell him that you have a headache. He inquires about your diet, recent activities, home environment, and any unusual activities. He consults a medical book in a language you don t recognize. He asks to examine you. Allow Decline, Second Opinion
Physician cure You agree to be examined. After looking over your body and consulting the book again, the physician decides to perform bloodletting. He lets a few liters of blood and instructs you to return regularly for treatment. You feel much better. Another Treatment Finish
Informal You decide that the price of the formal doctors isn t worth it, and you don t trust the regulatory processes. You decide to look into alternative medical treatments. You hear about two practitioners who could help -- one from an advertisement and one from your husband s coworker. Advertisement Husband s Friend
This advertisement was found outside of a Bathhouse in Covent Garden England. It details the skills of John Rigg, who works as a cupper and bathhouse attendant. He provides many services at this bathhouse, for both men and women. next

Bathhouse You visit the bathhouse attendant you saw in the advertisement. You tell the attendant that you have a headache. He recommends application of healing oils, cupping on the upper back, a relaxing steam treatment and cold bath. Accept Second Opinion
Bathhouse cure You accept the treatment from the bathhouse attendant. It takes a few hours, and you feel more relaxed. However, not all of your pain is gone, and you are not entirely healed. You can get another treatment, or finish and return home. Another Treatment Finish
Oh, you are looking for a doctor? I went into the town marketplace earlier and saw that there was a Medical professional setting up shop. His booth had lots of advertisements, bottles, unusual plants, and other interesting things. He seemed like a charlatan honestly. I haven t seen him before, and I heard he s a famous traveling doctor. I am not sure what he sells, or what he can fix, but it can t hurt to check him out. next

Charlatan You visit the charlatan you heard about from your husband s friend s story. You tell him that you have a headache. He loudly announces that he has an immediate cure that he obtained from New World Merchants, and it will cost 2 weeks of your husband s trade salary. Pay fee Second Opinion
Charlatan cure After purchasing, you perform the activities he said, and drink the New World potion. However, you have no improvement, and return to the marketplace. The Charlatan has disappeared! You can get another treatment, or finish. Another Treatment Finish
