  3. English is the only compulsory course for the HSC so you must choose a 2 unit english course. Making sure you choose the course that is right for you is important. 3

Option 1: Advanced 2 unit Advanced English (with the option to also choose the 1 unit Extension English 1 course) Option 2: Standard 2 unit Standard English course Option 3: Studies 2 unit English Studies course (and opt to have this course count towards your ATAR) OR choose the 2 unit English Studies course (and opt to NOT 6 have this course count towards an ATAR)

  7. Advanced English English Advanced is designed for students to undertake the challenge of higher-order thinking to enhance their personal, social, educational and vocational lives. These students apply critical and creative skills in their composition of and response to texts in order to develop their academic achievement through understanding the nature and function of complex texts. 7

The Advanced English Course Year 11 Course (120 hours) Term 1: Common Module: Reading to Write Term 2: Module A: Narratives that Shape our World Term 3: Critical Study of Literature Year 12 Course (120 hours) Term 4: Module C: The Craft of Writing + Common Module: Texts and Human Experience Term 1: Common Module Continued Texts and Human Experiences Term 1: Module A: Textual Conversations Term 2: Module B: Critical Study of Literature 8

The Advanced English Course Students are required to closely study four prescribed texts, one drawn from each of the following categories: Shakespearean drama Prose fiction Poetry OR drama Text requirements The remaining text may be film, media or nonfiction text or may be selected from one of the categories above. 9

  10. Should I do Advanced English? I enjoy English. I am planning to go to university and need an ATAR. I know Shakespeare is compulsory and will make an effort to understand his writing. I am a good writer who is willing to put the time in to develop my skills further. I like to think critically and express my ideas. I like to read, and read widely across genres. I am motivated, organised and understand I am going to have to complete homework and independent research. I would like to do Extension 1 and /or Extension 2. 10

  11. If you select Advanced English, you have the option to study English Extension ONE in Year 11 and/or Extension ONE and TWO in Year 12. 11

  12. Extension English English Extension is designed for students undertaking English Advanced who choose to study at a more intensive level in diverse but specific areas. They enjoy engaging with complex levels of conceptualisation and seek the opportunity to work in increasingly independent ways. 12

Extension ONE English Year 11 Extension 1 Course (60 hours) Term 1: Texts Culture and Value Related Research Project Year 12 Extension 1 (60 hours) Term 4: Literary Worlds with One Elective option Year 12 Text requirements You will study at least THREE prescribed texts including TWO extended print texts. You will also study at least TWO related texts, This course is recommended for students that have a passion for reading and conceptual thinking. 13

The Major Work Journal The Composition Process Year 12 Extension 2 Text requirements You will undertake extensive independent investigation in . involving a range of complex texts during the composition process and document this in your Major Work Journal and Reflection Statement 14

  15. Should I do English Extension? I have selected Advanced English. I am a skilled writer who is keen to further develop in this area. I enjoy reading and have read widely. I enjoy working in a small group. I am self motivated and have well developed organisational skills. I would like to take Extension English 2 in Year 12. 15

Standard English English Standard is designed for all students to increase their expertise in English and consolidate their English literacy skills in order to enhance their personal, social, educational and vocational lives. The students learn to respond to and compose a wide variety of texts in a range of situations in order to be effective, creative and confident communicators. 16

  18. The Standard English Course Text requirements You will study: Short stories Short films A novel A prescribed play Speeches You MUST select at least one text of your own choosing for the Common Module. 18

Standard and Advanced Assessments (+ modes) (Year 11) - Maximum of 3 Minimum weighting 20% Maximum weighting 40% Only 1 may be a formal written exam 1 must be multimodal reading, writing + one other mode HSC (Year 12) - Maximum of 4 Minimum weighting 10% Maximum weighting 40% Only 1 may be formal written exam - usually the Trial Exam 1 must focus on the creative writing forms 1 must be multimodal 19 You must sit the HSC Examination

  20. Should I do English Standard? I have performed satisfactorily in Year 10 English. I am planning to go to University OR I might decide to go to University, I m not sure. I am not that keen on Shakespeare. I prefer not to study it. I enjoy more modern texts, particularly Australian texts. I need assistance to develop my writing further. I do not love reading in my spare time. I read if it is part of my studies. I am prepared for homework and independent study. 20

  21. English Studies Students explore the ideas, values, language forms, features and structures of texts in a range of personal, social, cultural and workplace contexts. They respond to and compose texts to extend experience and understanding, access information and assess its reliability, and synthesise the knowledge gained from a range of sources for a variety of purposes. In this course, students will consolidate their English literacy skills to enhance their personal, social, educational and vocational lives. 21

  24. Should I do English Studies? I am very good at other subjects, but English is not my best subject. I would prefer to devote my time and effort more to other subjects. I understand that English Studies is NOT an easy course or a class for low ability. I have vocational or job seeking aspirations. I know that I can still get an ATAR if I decide I want to go to University and sit the HSC Examination. 24
