How we are promoting Supported internships and inclusive apprenticeships DfE Pace setter site Promoting LDD and inclusive apprenticeships with Shropshire training provider consortium Development work with school SENCOS to promote supported internships and inclusive apprenticeships (funded by SEND team) Liaising with Shropshire and Telford NHS Trusts to offer supported internships and inclusive apprenticeships Involved in Widening Participation initiative with HEE (Health Education England)

Outcomes of development work to date Awareness raising (questionnaires, meetings, presentations to YP, parents and carers Case studies of success stories produced Video outlining young peoples experience of transition experiences being produced for the local offer Meetings with Post 16 settings to support and advise on supported internship delivery Increased numbers of Shropshire supported interns from 2 (2017) to 15 (2018)

  4. ENABLE SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT OFFER Enable Provides help and support for people with disabilities to enter paid employment, continuing as long as is required. Support young people to travel independently to school and college (funded through Shropshire Council Transport Department) Attend EHCP reviews of learners who are interested in progressing to a supported internship Deliver at information evenings in schools and colleges and PACC/IASS events

  6. SUPPORTED INTERNSHIPS WITH ENABLE What is a Supported Internship? A type of study programme aimed at young people aged 16 24 who have an EHC Plan, who want to move into employment and need extra support to do so Can be accessed at any age between 16 24 When should a supported internship/employment options be discussed? Delivered in partnership with Post 16 Providers

Suitability for a SI In order to benefit from a supported internship, young people need to: have employment as their main focus and want to work be at the right stage in their learning and development to benefit from a supported internship. A wide variety of learners can benefit from a supported internship including moderate to more severe learning disabilities, sensory impairments, physical disabilities and autism.

  8. Successful outcomes following an SI The ideal outcome offer of a paid job from an employer: but the following are positive outcomes: Voluntary Work (continued support from Enable to progress to paid work) Improving skills in English and Maths, handling money, interacting with the public Enabling the young person to b e better prepared for work Developing employment skills and confidence Building up experience for a CV Changing the perception of employers. Changing the perception of the young person s family re work. becoming independent travellers It is essential that the young person will have made significant progress in all of the above and be in a position to move into employment. Enable can refer Shropshire residents to our Disability Team to support with job search and to our Work and Health Team.

Example of a Learner journey to a Supported Internship Options discussed every year at EHCP review starting at Year 9 transition employment listed as an aim if applicable and targets agreed If a Supported internship is an agreed option, information given to young person and their parents/carers School involved and skills for working life included in curriculum, visits to employers, work experience, presentations from employers CV Interview Preparation/mock interview Independent travel training discussed

Example of a Learner Journey on a Supported Internship (2) Year 10 and 11 EHCP reviews, FE options explored Year 12 and 13 at Futures or Mainstream college Year 14 Supported internship (19 yrs) Year 15 an inclusive/LDD apprenticeship or employment without an apprenticeship (20 yrs) Year 16 employment (21 years) can be permitted work under 16 hours or 16+ hours OPTION 2 Year 12 at Futures/Mainstream college Year 13 Supported internship(18 yrs) Year 14 inclusive/LDD apprenticeship or paid employment (any number of hours) (19 yrs) Year 15 Employment (20 yrs) permitted work under 16 hours or 16+ hours

  11. Alternative routes to employment Depending on the young person s disability, the route to employment may be longer A supported internship may lead to unsupported voluntary work initially this is a good outcome and the first step towards employment and preparing for adulthood young person could be referred to Enable Job Seeking team for further support A supported internship could be delivered in partnership with other agencies to include independent living, social activities and pursuing hobbies to provide an alternative offer to residential college

  12. Other pathways A young person could be referred to the Enable disability team for support to find: Voluntary work (via personal budget) Paid work (via Adult Social care referral route Travel Training (via the specialist transport team or Adult Social care)

Process for referrals to Shropshires Enables Disability Supported Employment Service Social Care Team (if person is already open or receiving a Social Care service ) Make a referral through CareFirst Day Opportunities Complete referral form on Carefirst or send paper version Autism Hub Send a paper referral to the Enable Main Office Self Referral / Other Team Contact First Point of Contact 0345 6789044 to arrange Adult Social Care assessment at a local hub o o If paid work is not required Enable to discuss with the referrer and explore Personal Budget possibilities if appropriate Person Centred Initial Assessment involving Circle of Support carried out with Enable Employment Specialist Vocational Profile started CV Building / Interview preparation / Benefit situation clarified In work support: Travel Training Job coaching Reviews Retention Work Planned withdrawal

  14. Referral Criteria for Shropshires Enables Disability Supported Employment Service All people we support should be living in Shropshire and meet one of the following: Have a disability and be receiving a service form Adult Social Care Have a disability and need employment support to prevent them from needing a service from Adult Social Care Have previously been on the caseload of local authority Adult Social Care services in the last three years Be a young person (16-25 years) who is or has been on the caseloads of local authority Children s Disability Services in the last three years. The young person may also have an Education Health and Care (EHC) plan People can be referred directly from the Autism Hub Disability covers anyone with a physical, sensory or mental impairment that has a substantial (taking longer than it usually would to complete a daily task) or long-term (12 months or more) negative effect on the ability to carry out normal daily activities and people suffering from a progressive condition (one that gets worse over time)

  23. We as parents have witnessed a significant improvement in Tim s self esteem and confidence since joining the team.
