Hempland Primary School Welcome to Year 4 2024 - 2025
Meet the Year 4 Team! Mr Buckett Miss Bebbington Mr Dos Santos Mrs Hardy Mrs Bell Mrs Forman
Life in Year 4 The Year 4 curriculum is very closely linked with Year 3 and we will be ensuring that their Year 3 knowledge and skills are secure before building upon them further throughout Year 4. We will also be encouraging the children to develop their perseverance independence, being ready for learning, and taking responsibility. Children arrive at school between 8.40am and 8.50am and home time is 3:20pm. Timetable the school day will mainly focus on Maths and Literacy in the morning, and foundation subjects (Art, RE, PE, History, Geography, Computing, Technology, Music, MFL and Science) in the afternoons. The children will have a broad and balanced curriculum, planned to inspire the children and develop interest in their learning. On the school website, there is an optional homework grid which children can access and complete. We d love to see what they produce please bring them in to share!
Life in Year 4 Home-school communication can be done through email or phone call to the office who will forward information to staff ASAP (office@hempland.pmat.academy) This half term, PE will be on Monday (dance) and Tuesday (basketball) and children are to come into school wearing their PE kits. Please ensure that your child arrives at school in the appropriate PE kit (both indoor and outdoors) and ensure earrings are taken out.
Expectations in Year 4 We work hard towards our Hempland Values of Respect, Opportunity, Ambition and Resilience. We also have class charters that are specific to our classes. Children are rewarded in one of 4 ways: Stickers, Team Points, Headteacher s Sticker, Headteacher s Postcard home Reading - at home, please help your child by listening to them read for 20 minutes at least x 4 per week. Spellings - Weekly assignments will be set on Spelling Shed, and checks done in class on a Friday morning each week. We teach the words through the week and they have opportunities to practise but we encourage the children to also use Spelling Shed at home. Homework half term homework grid on Google Classroom and on the website. Children can either upload work there or hand it in at school. Times tables these are a BIG focus in Year 4! Please practise them with your child every week. You can do this on Maths Shed or Times Tables Rockstars, or simply on a piece of paper.
Curriculum & Topics Our topic for the start of the year is The Romans. We will be learning all about the Roman invasion and impact they had on life in Britain. Our text for this half term is Romans on the Rampage by Jeremy Strong We have lots of exciting things planned for the half term including learning new skills in basketball, developing our French skills and creating sculptures in Art. During PSHE we will be exploring positive relationships, and in RE we will be learning about different beliefs in different cultures. PPA cover is provided by Mr Woods (PE- Basketball) and Mrs Campbell (Geography) Key Dates Pedestrian training TBC Roman Day Wednesday 23rdOctober
E-Safety A large focus this half term, and this year, will be online safety. This will involve learning how to be responsible online, and the potential dangers and impacts of social media. We STRONGLY recommend that primary age children do not have access to apps such as TikTok, Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat etc. All of these have minimum ages in their terms and conditions because they know that these platforms are not suitable for the primary age range, due to potential dangers, and risks of children being exposed to unsuitable, upsetting or confusing materials.
