WAKE RESPONSIBLY Water Sport Industry Association
Purpose: WSIA created the Wake Responsibly education program in 2015 to address the proper etiquette and safety of wakeboarding and wakesurfing. We did this in conjunction with the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). The United States Coast Guard now contributes grant funding to help expand the scope. In 2022 WSIA presented multiple presentations in 22 states. These presentations are done at local lakes in that have high loads and hence wave action is an issue.
GOAL: To educate all wakeboarding and wakesurfing enthusiasts on proper operation to mitigate possible negative effects. To find a way that all waterway users can share the water in a safe responsible way.
Tenets: WSIA has adopted the NASBLA standard of a 200 setback from any shoreline, dock or any in-water object. Minimize repetitive passes in the same area. Keep music at a level that does not disturb those on shore.
Safety Provisions (legislative action) 200 setback. By extension, sections of waterways narrower than 400 should be off-limits. Ban wakesurfingafter dark. Mandate board riders wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket. Ban wakesurfing behind a boat with an exposed propeller.
Etiquette Provisions: Wakesurfso the surfing side is away from the closest shore. When turning a sharp turn creates the largest wake that a boat can create in the turn. On narrow lakes one should only use terminus wakesurfing runs.
