Vietnam, a country with a tropical climate and dense jungles, was deeply affected by the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 1970s. The war, which involved over 2.5 million Americans, led to casualties on both sides and left a lasting impact on American society. The guerilla warfare tactics of the Vietcong made it a difficult war to fight, and the conflict sparked social and political unrest in the U.S. with protests against conscription and America's involvement in Southeast Asia. The war left a legacy of division and introspection in American history.

  1. VIETNAM CONCEPT REVIEW

  2. * Vietnam, and much of Southeast Asia has a tropical, warm, muggy climate. Dense jungles cover large areas of land here. Coffee and rice are two of Vietnam s primary exports.

  3. In the 1960s and 1970s, more than 2.5 million Americans fought in Vietnam. The U.S. feared North Vietnam s Communist regime would conquer South Vietnam and result in the rapid expansion of Communism throughout SE Asia. 3 million Vietnamese and over 58,200 Americans died. Many are still missing.

  4. The Vietnam War deeply divided American people. Many veterans returning home were met with anger and insults. Saigon was the capital of South Vietnam. It was overrun by the Communists from the North in April 1975 and renamed Ho Chi Minh City.

  5. Vietnam was a French colony before World War 2 (1939-1945). During the war, it was occupied by Japan. After World War 2 in the Truman Doctrine, President Harry S. Truman said that the U.S. would defend any nation threatened by Communism. In 1949, Communist forces controlled China

  6. The Vietnam War was a guerilla war, very difficult for Americans to fight. The enemy didn t wear uniforms and roamed the countryside, able to blend into the civilian population. Communist guerrillas in the South were called the Vietcong.

  7. Vietnam was Americas first televised war. Grisly combat images were shown on T.V. almost every night. American culture and youth were changing; people began to question the cost in lives and America s involvement in what seemed like Vietnam s own civil war.

  8. In the Vietnam War, the government practiced conscription (a draft). This forced men as young as 18 to fight in the war whether they believed in it or not. Voting age=21; Draft age=18 The draft and Americans sent to fight also caused socio-economic rifts in society, more protests.

  9. Over 58,000 American soldiers died and 150,000 were injured. The war s cost to the U.S. was over $100 billion dollars.
