National Safety Council statistics tell us that many people die or suffer serious injury needlessly each year as a result of farm ac- cidents. 7. Never jump from tractor. There is a danger of catching clothing on protruding parts. 8. Use steps and hand holds when mounting and dismounting tractor or for servicing com- ponents too high too reach from the ground Don't become a statistic or a victim. with all operators ANNUAL- & L Y. It is important that all operators be familiar with, AND FOLLOW, safety precau- tions. 9. Fasten seatbelt before starting engine. Carefully review the pro- cedures given in this manual .: 10. Safety devices are intended to protect operators of Versatile equipment from injury or death. Under no circumstances should they be disabled or removed. Operating Instructions must be given to everyone using the tractor before operation and at least once yearly thereafter in compliance with OSHA Regulation 1928.57. OPERATING SAFETY GENERAL SAFETY 1. Always operate tractor from the operator's seat. 1. Never allow an unauthorized driver to operate tractor. 2. Lock seat in position before operating tractor. 2. Keep a fire extinguisher in the cab. Maintain it and be familiar with its use. 3. Never carry passengers. f 3. Always start tractor wi.th gearshift levers in neutral. This is particularly impor- tant during cold weather operation. 4. Always wait until all warning lights and buzzer go out before putting tractor into gear. 4. Never operate machine in a closed building. 5. Never oil, grease or adjust tractor while it is moving. Do not leave engine running while tractor or drawn equipment is being ad- justed, repaired or cleaned. 5. Always keep sleeves, jackets or other clothing relatively tight and belted, since loose clothes might catch in moving parts. 6. Ensure parkbrake is set when tractor is stopped. Tractor can freewheel even when in gear. 6. Provide a first aid kit for use in case of accident. 7. Avoid abrupt turns, starts or stops. 8. Keep all safety shields in place when operating tractor. Safety 1
9. Do not operate tractor when you are tired. Take a rest. 2. Wear gloves and goggles and use a piece of cardboard or wood as a backstop for spur ting oil when searching for hydraulic leaks. 10. Never operate machine at high speeds in crowded areas. Damage to machine and injury to operator or bystanders may result. 3. Add coolant to the radiator only when engine is stopped and cool. Turn radiator cap to its first stop to relieve pressure before remov- ing. 11. Do not start engine by shorting across starter terminals. Tractor will move when starting safety switch is bypassed. 4. Never refuel tractor when engine is hot or running. Do not smoke while filling fuel tank or servicing fuel system. Use precautions in handling any type of tractor fuel. Vaporized diesel fuel is as dangerous as gasoline. Do not overfill. SAFE OPERATION IN ROUGH TERRAIN 1. Drive tractor slowly on hillsides and curves to eliminate the danger of tipping. Avoid slopes which are too steep for safe operation. 5. Do not smoke and avoid open flames when filling batteries. 2. Always drive slowly over rough ground. Drive at speeds slow enough to ensure your safety. 3. Avoid sharp turns on hillsides. 6. Ether starting fluid is highly flammable. Do not use near fire, sparks, open flames or while engine is running. 4. When driving out of a ditch, gully or up a steep hillside, engage the clutch slowly. 5. When descending steep grades, select a sufficiently low gear to maintain control with minimum braking. 7. Remove mud, crop residue, chains and tools from steps and operator's platform. They may interfere with pedal operation or entry/exit from tractor. 6. Never drive near the edge of a ditch or gully unless absolutely necessary. 8. Turn OFF lever at hydraulic couplers to pre- vent flow to implements when servicing. 7. Be especially alert when operating machine at row ends, road slopes and around obstruc tions. 9. Ground fuel storage tanks to prevent static buildup. MAINTENANCE SAFETY 1. Escaping hydraulic oil under pressure can penetrate the ski n caus ing personal injury. En- sure connections are tight and lines and hoses are undamaged . disconnecting hydraulic lines, relieve all pressure. Do not overfill tank. 10. Ensure turbocharger is cool before servicing. 11. Keep flammable material away from tur bocharger. Before 12. Never mount a damaged tire. Tire may burst with explosive force. Safety 2
5. Keep to the right and yield the right-of-way especially when pulling implements. Pull off road and stop to allow motorists to pass. Drive on the road shoulder, if permitted by law. IMPLEMENT SAFETY 1. Always hitch loads to drawbar or hitch pOints. 2. When hitching drawn equipment to drawbar, back tractor past clevis then move forward so that in making the connection, tractor is be moving away from equipment. 6. Use extreme caution when pulling heavy loads at road speeds. Avoid hard application of tractor brakes at high speeds. 3. Always lower implements to the ground when not in use and turn OFF lever couplers. Hydraulic pressure can rupture hoses releas- ing high pressure oil causing implement damage. 7. Ensure headlights are adjusted so they will not blind operators of oncoming vehicles. 4. Be careful when turning with a towed imple- ment. Lift it from the ground during turns. Side thrust could damage tires. CHEMICAL SAFETY 1. The cab ai r fi Iters are not designed to fi Iter harmful chemicals. When using agricultural chemicals, follow the manufacturer's in- structions carefully. 5. Use transport locks, lower implement to ground or securely block frame before servic- ing implement. 2. Do not carry harmful chemicals in the cab. Chemicals may rupture container and fumes may poison the operator. TRANSPORT SAFETY 1. Equip towed implements with slow moving vehicle (SMV) signs when travell- ing on public roads. 3. Wear OSHA approved respiratory protection when working near toxic chemicals. Main- tain equipment regularly. 2. Install additional lights on implement rear to safeguard against rear end collisions. Daybreak and dusk are particularly dangerous. VERSATILE tractors have seven pin connectors to facilitate installation of ex- tra lighting. ARTICULATION LOCK 1. Use articulation lock during stationary ap- plications, servicing, jacking or overhaul operations. Do not use when tractor is mov- ing. 3. Be aware of transport width of towed im- plements. Install additional lights to left side of wide implements to alert passing traffic. Keep clear of the approaching lane. 2. Before engaging lock, drive tractor to a level surface, put steering straight, engage parkbrake, put gearshift in neutral and stop engine. Remove arm from storage position and put it over bracket on rear of front frame. Insert pin and secure with klik pin.lt may be necessary to start engine and articulate frame slightly to engage lockpin. 4. Use hazard warning flashers when transpor- ting or driving tractor on public roads unless prohibited by law in your area. Check with local authorities. 3 Safety

ENGINE BREAKIN SAFETY The Cummins engines used in VERSATILE Tractors have been run on a dynamometer before installation but not enough to be con sidered broken in. DO NOT OPERATE TRACTOR IN A CLOSED BUILDING. BEFORE STARTING ENGINE EN SURE ALL CONTROLS ARE IN NEUTRAL AND PARKBRAKE ENGAGED. 1. Do not operate engine at more than 3/4 throt tie for the first 24 hours of operation. Full throttle should only be held for short inter vals during the next 24 hours of operation. OPERATE ALL CONTROLS ONLY FROM OPERATOR'S SEAT. 2. Check oil every 8 to 10 hours for the first 100 hours of operation. STOP ENGINE BEFORE SERVIC ING TRACTOR. KEEP ALL SHIELDS IN PLACE. BREAK IN PERIOD USE HANDHOLDS AND STEPS WHEN MOUNTING AND DIS MOUNTING TRACTOR. The first 50 hours of operation are the most critical for ensuring long and dependable tractor life. Do the following: USE ARTICULATION LOCK IN STATIONARY APPLICATIONS AND SERVICING. DO NOT USE WHEN TRACTOR IS MOVING. 1. Torque wheel nuts to axles and axle pad mounting bolts after the first hour of opera tion. ON BEFORE STOPPING, TURNING OR SLOWING DOWN TRACTOR. HIGHWAYS, SIGNAL 2. Change differential, transmission and planetary gear oil after the first 30 hours of operation. Replace filter where applicable. USE PROPER SAFETY DEVICES TO WARN OF SLOW MOVING VEHICLE WHEN DRIVING ON PUBLIC ROADS. CHECK WITH LOCAL AUTHORITIES CONCER NING HIGHWAY TRAVEL. 3. Check all oil levels daily for the first 50 hours of operation. 4. Change engine oil and filters after the first 50 hours of operation. 5. Change hydraulic and transmission return filters after the first 50 hours of operation. 6. Check clutch adjustment after the first 50 hours of operation. BE ALERT Operation 7
PRESTART INSPECTION 6. Release clutch. Ensure transmission oil pressure warning light goes out within five seconds. Do the following before starting engine each day: 7. Warm engine to 50 C (120 F) before putting under load. 1. Check engine oil level 2. Check engine coolant level CLUTCH OPERATION 3. Check radiator and grill The clutch safety switch permits engine starting only when clutch pedal is depressed. Sudden movement caused by transmission in gear when engine cranks is prevented. 4. Inspect all belts, lights, switches, hoses, lines, fittings, seals, tires, nuts and bolts for possible failure and looseness 5. Check three-point hitch for wear especially around metal-to-metal parts Engage clutch at engine speeds between 1 000 and 1 700 r/min. After tractor andlor load is started, increase engine speed to rated r/min. There is an optional clutch decelerator available which automatically decreases engine rlmin to 1 700 rlmin when depressed. Do not use clutch as decelerator. Avoid overloading clutch to pre- vent slippage and tractor damage. ENGINE STARTING IMPORTANT Protect turbocharger during start up by not opening throttle or ac celerating above 1 000 rlmin until normal engine idle speed oil pressure registers on gauge. SHIFTING GEARS All gears in the transmission are constantly in mesh. When a gear is selected, shifting collars splined to the shafts, not gears, are being engag- ed. For these collars to mesh it is necessary at times for the transmission to be rotated by turn- ing the steering wheel left or right and slightly releasing the clutch pedal from the floor. Mechanical Transmission 1. Fasten seat belt and set parkbrake. 2. Put throttle lever into low (idle). Do the following when shifting gears: NOTE 1. Stop tractor. Depress clutch pedal when star- ting engine. A safety switch per- mits engine starting only when clutch pedal is depressed. 2. Reduce engine speed to 1 000 r/min. 3. Depress clutch pedal fully. The transmission oil pressure warning light should come ON. 3. Depress clutch pedal and put gearshift lever in neutral. 4. Release clutch pedal approx 25 mm (one in.) from floor to allow gears to rotate slightly. 4. Turn keyswitch to START to crank engine. 5. Put range select andlor gearshift into desired position. If gears do not mesh immediately, turn the steering wheel either left or right to allow the transmission to rotate slightly. 5. Move throttle lever to keep engine running. Idle speed is 1 000 r/min. Avoid excessive rlmin during warm-up. 8 Operation

NOTE CHANGING VEHICLE DIRECTION Manual shifting above first is not possible while clutch pedal is depressed. - CAUTION --------- 3. Release clutch pedal slowly to achieve a smooth start. NEVER CHANGE SHIFT DIREC- TION WHILE TRACTOR IS MOV ING. REVERSALS UNINHIBITED AND DIRECTION CHANGES COULD BE ABRUPT CAUSING PERSONAL INJURY .. OR EQUIPMENT DAMAGE. ARE NOTE A. Gradual clutch pedal application is possible only in first forward or reverse. Clutch pedal movement in any other range will cause clutch to be fully ON or OFF. BE ALERT 4. To upshift, move range select lever to upshift (rabbit) position. 1. Depress clutch pedal. 5. To downshift, move range select lever to downshift (turtle) position. 2. Move range select lever to neutal. 3. Stop tractor using brakes if necessary. NOTE 4 Lift lockring and move range select lever to FORWARD or REVERSE. When shifting up or down one range only, do not hold range select lever longer than 0.8 seconds. If lever is held longer, the transmission will continue upshifting at 0.8 second intervals. 5. Release clutch pedal slowly to achieve a smooth start. 6. Upshift to desired range. AUTOMATIC RANGE SELECT ERROR CODES Depressing the clutch pedal while the tractor is moving causes a neutral condition. This allows the electronic control to automatically select a transmission range to match tractor speed when the clutch pedal is released, as follows: Error codes listed below indicate a possible system malfunction. The digital range display will indicate the error code alternately with the range indication. If the error code cannot be cleared using the procedure described, shut down tractor and correct the malfunction. If the code still cannot be cleared, oontact your Ver- satile dealer. Range Select Lever in Forward: A higher or lower gear will be selected as tractor speed changes during the neutral condition. Range Select Lever in Reverse: will be selected as the tractor slows. A lower gear Flashing"P": Indicates that power has been applied with the range select lever out of neutral or upldown shift contact closed. Put lever into neutral or repair shift contacts to clear code. This condition can be caused by an intermittent open circuit in the power supply to the con troller. Check connectors and wires for poor con tinuity. NOTE The automatic range select func- tion operates only during the neutral condition. The displayed range will be engaged only when clutch pedal is released. Operation 11
