UNMAS Overview Saves lives, assists recovery from conflict, supports early peace building initiatives and socio-economic development Supports national authorities manage weapons and ammunition safely, securely and in an accountable manner Enables UN peace operations to fulfill their mandates by protecting against explosive threats including in asymmetric environments Raises risk awareness associated with explosive hazards and advocates for victim assistance
5 Pillars of Mine Action Survey and clearance (mines, explosive remnants of war, cluster munitions, improvised explosive devices) Risk education Stockpile destruction (weapons and ammunition management) Advocacy Victim assistance
UNMAS and UN Peace Operations UNMAS is an integrated component of 12 UN peace operations both peacekeeping operations and special political missions. UNMAS facilitates troop deployments and contributes to protection of civilians and the Mission Force by: Training Equipping Assisting Advising Mentoring
Humanitarian Mine Action Humanitarian Mine Action (protection, safe return of IDP/refugees, support to political processes) Responding to Emergency Humanitarian Crisis (Rapid Response) UN Voluntary Trust Fund for Assistance in Mine Action
Policy, Advisory Service and Best Practices Policy Development IED Threat Mitigation guidance for UN IED Threat Mitigation Advisory Cell at Headquarters Best Practices IED Threat Mitigation and WAM workshops; Community of Practice
