1. Versification Meter The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in verse Accent: The stress placed upon certain syllables in a line of verse Foot: Basic unit of measurement. A foot consists of two or three syllables, at least one of which is stressed. amb (iambic) : one unstressed syllable is followed by a stressed syllable: ( - / ) examples - / - / compare, control

2. Trochee (trochaic) One stressed syllable is followed by an unstressed syllable ( / - ) as in / - / - apple summer

3. Scansion is to analyze the metrical pattern of the verse; to divide the line of the poem into feet by indicating accents and counting syllables to determine the meter of the poem.

4. Rhyme The repetition of the identical or similar stressed sound or sounds Perfect rhyme (full rhyme, true rhyme, exact rhyme) fade-shade down-town Half rhyme Fault-built frost-trust

5. Stanza : a group lines in a poem. A stanza pattern is determined by the number of lines, meter and rhyme scheme. Couplet Heroic couplet Tercet
