Social case work in psychiatric settings is a method employed by mental health social workers to help individuals cope with social, emotional, and environmental needs. It involves building rapport, understanding and solving internal problems, strengthening ego power, and developing internal resources to promote better adjustment and well-being. Casework relationships focus on elements of acceptance, expectation, support, and stimulation, aiming at personality development, capacity building, and increased societal adjustment. Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include understanding human development, recognized treatment interventions, maintaining therapeutic relationships, effective communication, and conducting individual, family, and group therapies.

DEFINITION Casework involves wide variety of activities in various settings, aimed to help individuals, couples and families to cope up more effectively with problems which impaired Social casework has been a predominant social work method of practice in psychiatric setting .It concerned with the adjustment and development of the individual towards more satisfying human relations. Psychiatric social worker also known as mental health social workers, who engage in mental health social work .They often work in hospitals or inpatient psychiatric treatment centers. They assess patients social, emotional, interpersonal, economic and environmental needs, along with their strengths

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA) Knowledge General knowledge of normal and abnormal human development and behavior General knowledge of recognized treatment interventions such as behavior modification; family, group and individual psychotherapies; psychosexual education; substance abuse interventions; and use of psychotropic medications. skill In developing and maintaining a therapeutic relationship with mentally ill patients. In communicating with patients and families who may be experiencing distress.
In conducting and teaching individual , family and group therapies In interviewing to gather data needed to diagnose the needs of individuals and their families In preparing clear, concise written case narratives and reports. In functioning as patient advocate to ensure that appropriate social services are being delivered which could include working with state and federal agencies and community organizations for the coordination of services. Casework practitioners(psychiatric social worker) : They perform many roles besides delivering direct psychosocial service work face to face with the clients (patients), their family, and sometime visit their community to provide services. They also work in collaboration with other professionals , organizations and institutions, and act to advocate with agencies, administrators, policy makers, boards and legislatures.
SCENARIO In a psychiatric hospital, the social worker obtains, records, and interprets facts about the patient s background and his environment that reveal the social problems involved in the illness and will aid the psychiatrist in diagnosis and treatment. Helps the patient s family to understand the nature of the illness, to deal with the problems it creates for them, And to cooperate in the patient s recovery. Helps patients to adjust to the hospital environment and encourages them to follow the recommendations of the psychiatrist.
Assists those who are ready to leave the hospital for convalescence at home and helps them to reestablish themselves in the community Visits later to see that progress is being made or to arrange for further treatment. She works with the psychologist, the nurse, the dietitian, the therapist, the teacher, the vocational counselor, and all others who are assisting the patient to recover.
Uses Decreasing tension and guilt Increasing self confidence Encouraging healthy functioning that maintains declined equilibrium Helping to buildup compensatory strength and satisfaction . The case worker accepts the feeling and shows keep interest on them. They clarifies the problem and encourages him to take his own decision . Psychological support The social worker helps him to strengthen clients ego through the techniques of guidance, reassurance persuasion and psychological support.
Performs intakes and evaluations: A social worker is often one of the first professionals a patient as contact with when he seeks treatment in psychiatric setting . Before a patient can receive treatment ,he must complete and intake and evaluation process . In many cases , social workers are the main providers of the services in a psychiatric setting. The assigned social worker will meet with the client to perform an intake, which usually consists of obtaining general identifying information, medical insurance information , previous history of medical and psychiatric treatment and the presenting problem, or the reason the patient is seeking treatment at the time. Roles and responsibilities
Formulates treatment plans: Once a client has completed the evaluation process ,a social worker will formulate a treatment plan. A treatment plan consists of a proposed course of a treatment based on the patients presenting problem and any other problems identified during the evaluation. Depending on the patients specific concerns and problems ,a social worker may consult other professionals , such as psychiatrics or psychologists , to ask for assistance in treatment plan formulation. This is usually the case , for example , if a patient presents with severe psychiatric symptoms , such as delusions or suicidal tendencies ,that require medication or other, more intense forms of intervention.
Intervenes in crisis situations: A social worker in a psychiatric setting is usually involved in crisis intervention, which may include providing telephone crisis coverage , helping walk-in patients who require immediate treatment and offering community referrals to patients who need specific types of emergency assistance , such as housing or food. The goal of psychiatric social worker in such situations is often to evaluate whether the patient can return to his normal level of functioning or whether to provide additional , more long term treatment or assistance. For example, psychiatric social worker who helps a severely depressed walk-in patent might decide to admit the patient to a short- term care unit for additional monitoring and treatment ,with the patients consent
Provides treatment and other services: A psychiatric social worker provides a wide range of treatments and other services to patients based on their specific presenting problems . Some of the treatments and services a psychiatric social worker might provide include: Short term psychotherapy Substance abuse counseling Cognitive behavior therapy Group counseling Family therapy Supportive counseling Case management and Advocacy. In addition , they often provides consultation to other professionals involved in a patients care . This might include discussing a patients progress in treatment with family doctors or private therapists , as long as the patient has provided written consent.
