Polarization It is a property applying to transverse waves that specifies the geometrical orientation of oscillation. In transverse wave, the direction of oscillation is perpendicular to the direction of motion of wave Why only transverse wave polarized not longitudinal? Longitudinal wave(sound wave), the displacement of particle in oscillation is always in the direction of propagation . So these wave don't exhibit polarization. Transverse waves that exhibit polarization include e.m wave as light and radio waves etc. An e.m wave such as light consist of a coupled oscillation of electric and magnetic field which are always perpendicular to each other. By convention, polarization of e.m waves refer to direction of electric field as E>377H.
Types of polarization The linear polarization or plane polarization The linear polarization of e.m radiation is confinement of e.field and m. field vector to a given plane along the direction of propagation. The fields oscillation in a single direction.
Circular polarization The circular polarization of e.m wave is a polarization state at which at every point, the e,m wave has a constant magnitude but its rotates at constant rate in a plane perpendicular to the direction of wave. Rotation can have two possible direction If field rotate in right hand direction w.r.t the direction of wave travel, it is right circular polarization. If field rotate in left hand direction it is called left hand polarization.
Elliptical polarization The elliptical polarization is the polarization of e.m wave such that the tip of electric field vector describes an ellipse in any fixed plane intersecting and normal to the direction of propagation
Unpolarized light Light or other e.m radiation from many sources such as sun, incandescent lamp How to polarized?
