Personification, Simile, and metaphor
Personification comparison in which a nonhuman subject is given human characteristics Anthropomorphism: is when human characteristics are given to an animal or god. The characters of Cogsworth, Lumerie, Mrs. Potts, and Chip from Beauty and the Beast are all examples of Anthropomorphism Examples of Personification: The storm said something muffled. Lightning danced across the sky. The car complained as the key was roughly turned in its ignition. Rita heard the last piece of pie calling her name.
Simile compares two unlike things using the words like or as. Examples: You were as brave as a lion. They fought like cats and dogs. He is as funny as a barrel of monkeys. This house is as clean as a whistle. Your explanation is as clear as mud. Watching the show was like watching grass grow.
Metaphor compares two unlike things by saying that one thing is the other Does not use the words like or as. Examples: The snow is a white blanket. He is a shining star. Her long hair was a flowing golden river. The children were flowers grown in concrete gardens. The calm lake was a mirror.
Personification Practice Read the following sentences. Write P on the line if the sentence is an example of personification. Write N if the sentence is not an example of personification. 1. The tortoise moved slowly across the sand.______________ 2.Sally School Bus bounced down the road and beeped a cheerful hello.______ 3. Ah ha, thought the puppy. Now I know where the cat is hiding! ________ 4.The jet engines made a huge noise as the plane took off.________ 5. The rabbits ate the lettuce in our garden.______________
