What is a part of speech? A part of speech is a name given to a word based on its job in a sentence.
How many parts of speech are there in English? There are 8 parts of speech in English.
INTERJECTION NOUN CONJUNCTION 8 PARTS OF SPEECH PRONOUN PREPOSITION ADJECTIVE VERB ADVERB
PARTS AND THEIR FUCTIONS NOUN : Naming word PRONOUN: Replaces a noun Adjective: Describes something VERB: Is an action or state ADVERB: Describes a verb PREPOSITION: Shows a relationship CONJUNCTION: Joins words or clauses INTERJECTION: Expresses emotion
What are they? They are . 1. Verb: action / state Jack plays tennis three times a week. I am a teacher.
2. Noun: person, place, animal, animal, thing, feeling . Jack went to Paris on vacation with family last year.
3. pronoun: replaces a noun Melvin is at the movie with Melvin's girlfriend. Melvin really enjoys spending time with Melvin s girlfriend. Melvin is at the movie with his girlfriend. He really enjoys time with her.
ADJECTIVES ..used to add information to nouns / pronouns
They drive an amazing big red sports car. Q: What is your opinion of the car? A: Amazing Q: What size is the car? A: Big Q: What colour is the car? A: Red Q: What type of car is it? A: Sports (( Articles : a , an , the ))
6. ADVERB info verb , VERB, ADJECTIVE, ADVERB Yesterday evening, we walked somewhat slowly in a very beautiful garden. yesterday evening ( Time ) Slowly (Manner) somewhat ( Frequency )
6. preposition: in on, at, by, from, with, before, after.. I ll see at the office on Monday.
CONJUNCTION : and, but, or , so , because , . Clara and Jack are best friends. Sara is playing with her toy. He is either a teacher or a doctor.
Clause 1 + linker + Clause 2 I didn t go to schools yesterday because I was ill.
8. Interjection: Oh, Wow, .. Oh , Wow, Alas , . It is a word that expresses a strong emotion . Joy, sorrow excitement surprise , pain , sadness, happiness and so on. Wow, he is smart. Oh, she looked tried. Yes, Jack has got high marks in English. .
