HUD-VASH is a collaborative initiative by HUD and VA to provide housing assistance to homeless veterans. The program combines housing vouchers with VA services to address challenges like mental health and substance abuse. Veterans receive support to find and maintain permanent housing, with benefits for landlords as well. Eligibility is determined by the VA, and veterans have flexibility in leasing options, including the ability to move cities. The program has been successful in reducing veteran homelessness and is a model for similar initiatives.

HUD-VASH provides support to veterans to address challenges like trauma, mental health and substance abuse that interfere with obtaining stable housing. HUD-VASH has substantially reduced chronic homelessness among veterans and has served as a great example for other initiatives aimed at reducing homelessness.

  3. What is the HUD-VASH Program? HUD-VASH is a collaborative program between HUD* and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). It is administered locally by public housing authorities (PHAs) and VA Medical Centers (VAMCs) The VA refers the veteran to the local housing authority who issues the Voucher, inspects the rental unit and contracts with the landlord. The VA continues to provide support to the Veteran after they move in HUD-VASH combines housing choice vouchers (HCV) with wraparound VA services to help homeless veterans and their families find and maintain permanent, affordable housing *U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
