Engine classification involves categorizing engines based on various factors such as combustion type, number of strokes, cylinder design, and ignition method. Common classifications include external and internal combustion engines, as well as categories based on the design and use of the engine. Additionally, engines can be classified based on their ignition method, thermodynamic cycle, working principle, number of cylinders, cylinder design, valve system, cooling system, and basic design. This detailed overview provides insight into the diverse aspects of engine classification and design.

  1. ENGINE & ITS CLASSIFICATION CLASS-2

  2. Engine A machine for converting energy into mechanical force and motion.

  3. Heat Engine An engine which uses heat to convert the chemical energy of a fuel into mechanical force and motion

  4. TWO GENERAL CATEGORIES BASED ON DESIGN External combustion engine Internal combustion engine

  5. BASED ON DESIGN AND USE In a steam engine the combustion of fuel takes place outside the engine and the steam thus formed is used to run the engine. Thus, it is known as external combustion engine. In the case of internal combustion engine, the combustion of fuel takes place inside the engine cylinder itself.

  6. Classification of IC Engine Classification of IC Engine Ignition : Spark ignition, compression ignition Thermodynamic Cycle: Otto, Diesel and Dual cycle Working principle: Four stroke, two stroke cycle No. of Cylinder: Single cylinder, multi cylinder Cylinder design: Vertical, horizontal, slant Position of cylinder: In-line, V, opposed cylinder, radial Valve system: Over head or I head, L head & F Head Cooling system: Air cooled, water cooled engine Basic design: Reciprocating or rotary

  7. Ignition Compression ignition Spark ignition

  8. Number of Strokes Two stroke Four stroke

  9. Two Stroke Four Stroke
