Understanding Energy Storage and Transfer Concepts
Explore the concept of energy stores and transfers, including various types such as gravitational potential, chemical, thermal, kinetic, and elastic potential energy. Learn about the conservation of energy principle and how energy can be stored and transferred in different ways. Engage in activities and self-assessments to deepen your understanding of energy storage mechanisms.

Energy Stores & Transfers Do now activity: What do we already know about energy stores? Discuss in pairs, write your ideas down in your books.
Progress indicators GOOD PROGRESS: Recall some common energy transfers Describe types of energy stores OUTSTANDING PROGRESS: Describe energy before and after a change
The principle of the conservation of energy: Energy cannot be created or destroyed So what can it do? It can be stored in various ways and it can be transferred.
Energy can be stored in different ways and transferred too. Below are some images which represent some types of energy stores. What do you think they might be? THINK! chemical elastic potential gravitational potential kinetic thermal
Self-assessment: gravitational potential chemical thermal chemical kinetic elastic potential
There are five ways in which energy can be stored: C Th . K Gr . El Task: Finish the words and then match with the correct description from below! The type of energy that is stored within a moving object The type of energy that can be stored in a springy object if you stretch or squash it The type of energy that is stored in an object that has the potential to fall due to gravity This energy stores includes fuels, foods, or the chemicals found in batteries. The energy is transferred during chemical reactions This describes the energy store a substance has because of it s temperature
Self-assessment: This energy stores includes fuels, foods, or the chemicals found in batteries. The energy is transferred during chemical reactions. Chemical Thermal This describes the energy store a substance has because of it s temperature. Kinetic The type of energy that is stored within a moving object. Gravitational Potential Energy The type of energy that is stored in an object that has the potential to fall due to gravity. Elastic - The type of energy that can be stored in a springy object if you stretch or squash it.
There are also different ways in which energy can be transferred. Look at the pictures below and try and figure out what they might be! Electric Current Sound Light
Energy transfers what is happening? Task: Match the correct statement to the correct box to show how energy is transferred by a torch. Light waves Chemical energy store in the battery Electric current in the wires Energy transferred to the surroundings Increase in the thermal energy store of the surroundings
Self-assessment: Light waves Increase in the thermal energy store of the surroundings Chemical energy store in the battery Electric current in the wires Energy transferred to the surroundings
Task: Complete the energy transfer diagrams: Ch______ energy store in the candle Energy is transferred to the surroundings El______ energy is transferred to the TV Energy is transferred to the surroundings
Self-assessment: Energy is transferred as light waves. Chemical energy store in the candle Energy is transferred to the thermal energy store of the surroundings. Energy is transferred to the surroundings Energy is transferred as light waves. Electrical energy is transferred to the TV Energy is transferred as sound waves. Energy is transferred to the thermal energy store of the surroundings Energy is transferred to the surroundings
Investigate: The height a ball bounces back compared to the height it was dropped from. Task: You must work in 3 s for this experiment: Person 1: Ball dropper Person 2: Reads the height the ball bounces back up to. Person 3: The scribe writes down the height the ball was dropped from and the height it bounces back up to Height that the ball was dropped from (cm) Height that the ball bounces back up to (cm)
CONCLUSION: 1. What type of energy did the ball have before you dropped it? 2. What type of energy was your answer to Q1 transferred to when the ball dropped? 3. Did the ball ever bounce back up to it s original height? (1) 4. Can you explain your answer to Q3? Hint: What energy was wasted? (1) (1) (2)
Self-assessment: 1. The ball had a store of gravitational potential energy before it was dropped. (1) 2. As the ball dropped, the store of gravitational potential energy was transferred to kinetic energy. (1) 3. No, the ball never bounced back up to its original height. (1) 4. Because energy has been wasted, some energy had been transferred to the thermal energy store of the surroundings and also transferred as sound waves. (2)
