FOCUS make connections across grade levels and within grade level concepts so that students can build new understanding onto foundations built in previous years. 14. SBAC 8th Grade Sample Problem The total cost of an order of shirts from a company consists of the cost of each shirt plus a one-time design fee. The cost of each shirt is the same regardless of how many shirts are ordered. The company provides the following examples to customers to help them estimate the total cost of an order of shirts: 50 shirts cost $349.50 500 shirts cost $2370 Part A Based on the examples, what is the cost of each shirt, not including the one-time design fee? Explain how you found your answer. Part B What is the cost of the one-time design fee? Explain how you found your answer.

  25. END OF YEAR ASSESSMENTS No matter what course your child is enrolled in 6th grade students will take the 6th grade SBAC test and the LAUSD 6th grade placement test 7th grade students will take the 7th grade SBAC test 8th grade students will take the 8th grade SBAC test Middle school students enrolled in Algebra 1 will take an Algebra Summative test to determine whether high school credit will be issued. (must earn a classroom grade of C or better and a passing grade on the summative assessment).

  26. How Does My Child Qualify for the Alternative Accelerated Pathway? Multiple Criteria See Attachment C 1) Grades - 4s in math on all report cards in grades 4 and 5 1) Recommendations from the 5th grade teacher and an elementary school administrator. (The middle school will initiate this process) 2) Mandatory Parent Meeting regarding the pathway 1) Parent Compact must be signed. 1) Test scores Child must score proficient on the sixth grade placement exam. Handout: Attachment C

  27. Acceleration Agreements Child must maintain a B or better in class If child is NOT progressing in the class, a parent- teacher meeting will be held to discuss lack of progress and develop an action plan for intervention If at the end of the semester, the student has NOT earned a B or better, the school may reassign the student to another course. Schools and parents are encouraged to review other data such as interim assessments, end of course exams, and SBAC results to make decisions about whether a child should remain in the program. Handout: Attachment B2

  28. School requirements We are exploring whether we will be offer the program. We need a minimum number of students in order to make it financially feasible. Discuss minimum required Discuss model used Discuss what your school will do if this minimum is not met Discuss timeline for determining whether pathway will be offered. Testing at the end of May Early June.

  29. SUMMARY OF PATHWAYS Traditional Pathway Begins with CC Math 6 Takes Alg. 1 in 9th grade Possibility of completing 1 or 2 AP Courses Accelerated Pathway (Compacts 3 courses in 2 years) Begins with CC Math 6 Takes Geometry in 9th grade Possibility of completing 1 or 2 AP Courses Alternative Accelerated Pathway (Compacts 4 courses in 2 years) Begins with Alt. Accelerated CC Math 6/7 Takes Alg. 2 in 9th grade Possibility of completing up to 3 AP Courses Handout 3 Pathway Overview

  30. FINAL THOUGHTS The alternative accelerated pathway is intended for a very few high achieving math students. Common core assessments call for students to be proficient in problem solving, conceptual understanding and skills. There are multiple acceleration points in MS and HS that allow students to take AP Calculus regardless of the pathway. Building a strong mathematical foundation in middle school is essential for success in higher level mathematics

  31. NEXT STEPS Consider your child s grades, their well roundedness in skills, problem solving, understanding, and their work habitsd IF you want your child to tes,t sign the agreement. Write the testing date you prefer. Tell your child not to worry if they find the test hard. Make sure you signed in. We need the information. Test will be administered Sat. May 23rd at 9 am or Sun May 31st at 9 am at Bancroft MS. Arrive at 8:30 a.m. Whole process will take about 3 hours.
