What is mentoring? Origins Mentor . Homer s Odyssey and the 10 year Trojan wars .. Now business mentor is someone whose hindsight can become your foresight The process of mentoring: imparting skills, wisdom and experience from mentor to mentee helping the mentee achieve their aspirations and potential Mentoring - two way process between the mentor and mentee success based on quality of that relationship and trust whereby both parties learn from each other Many people informally mentored at work or in sport etc. or formally mentored Bing Crosby Frank Sinatra, Freddie Laker Richard Branson mentoring works dna
What business mentoring is not Mentoring confused with management consultancy or business coaching Mentoring is NOT: Free business consultancy A cosy relationship A fast track to winning work The mentor managing the business, delivering the business needs Mentoring is about offering support and experience to a mentee to ensure informed decisions are made and actions taken by the mentee Business mentoring develops people with the necessary technical skills but who need support in other areas dna
Role of the business mentor Role of mentor: provide advice, contacts and know-how Provide on-going personal support and encouragement Foster the development of the mentee and in turn the business Bring out and develop existing skills and prepare the mentee for next level KEY - Provide a confidential sounding board for taking complex and difficult decisions Benefits to mentee: Improved performance/ productivity Career and skills development enhanced knowledge Greater confidence dna
Choosing a business mentor First question what does the mentee want to achieve from the mentor? Gain knowledge, experience, and professional skills Enhanced personal and business effectiveness Right experience - mentor s own experience will: Determine what can be shared with the mentee difficulties, new challenges etc Encourage mentee to learn from their own experience success, failure, etc Dynamics of the relationship: Fit and chemistry are very important Is there mutual understanding/ respect Do they get along Is the mentor willing to mentor Crucially, does the mentor have the time to commit dna
Mentor qualities and success factors Some mentor qualities /factors lead to successful mentoring relationships: Well developed interpersonal skills and rapport building Effective observation, listening and questioning skills Ability to be neutral, objective and provide high quality feedback Not surprisingly, other factors contribute to a successful relationship: Enthusiasm genuine interest in mentee, needs and aspirations Motivating and encouraging to promote constructive change, new challenges and overcome difficulties Open and positive outlook share experience and be honest, appreciate the mentees position and see solutions dna
Ingredients for Success High mutual level of trust and agreed expectations both parties need to benefit from the relationship, be open and contribute fully Contracting expectations the rules of engagement including any ground rules not to interrupt, listen, keep open mind, not interrogate or preach etc. Comfortable, private surroundings free from work pressures and interruptions From outset need a clear agreed action plan and SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timed Finally, linking the mentoring to measurable outcomes clearly linked to business needs and agreed by both parties helps measure success dna
The First Meeting Get to know each other - agree how you would like to work together Agree what successful outcomes look like Set the ground rules including terminating the relationship Share information with mentor: Your objectives and career aspirations Career to date and areas for development Key business plans and information Final thought - the mentor and mentee are there because they want to be more often the mentor is voluntary and driven by a desire to share knowledge and experience and to benefit the mentee dna
The First Meeting some agenda items Item Outcome What are your expectations? To learn more about the nuclear industry and how to engage What do you hope to learn from each other? To understand how our capabilities meet current and future market requirements and establish whether nuclear is a market to enter What are the mentee s objectives? (SMART) Understand the UK nuclear market and its opportunities To understand how our capabilities match market opportunities To establish how best to market and establish our capabilities To better understand the requirements of working in the nuclear sector; safety culture, security training, PPE, site working and tendering finding opportunities dna
Concluding comments Mentoring is an excellent way to engage in new challenges To be successful it needs planning, thought, effort and discipline from both parties Expectations must be clearly set out and agreed from the start and then managed It is a relationship so it can go well and it can go wrong Matching the right mentor and mentee makes the difference Openness and trust are requirements as are confidentiality and respect It can have very positive personal and career development dna
