Understanding Adolescent Pregnancy in the Philippines: Trends and Challenges
Adolescent pregnancy remains a significant public health issue in the Philippines, with 210,000 babies born to teenage mothers annually. The prevalence has doubled from 7% to 14% between 2002 and 2013, with higher rates in rural areas and among the poorest quintile. Factors contributing to this phenomenon include limited education and disparities in healthcare access. Data for Eastern Visayas and Eastern Samar regions illustrate varying trends in adolescent birth rates, highlighting the need for targeted interventions. Efforts are being made to improve health outcomes among adolescents, such as increasing facility-based deliveries and skilled birth attendants.
