THE EXTERNAL EXAM 3 PARTS PAPER 1: READING, TRANSLATION & DIRECTED WRITING READING READING ONE PASSAGE IN FRENCH 30 MARKS (25% OF TOTAL MARK FOR COURSE ASSESSMENT) 20 MARKS FOR IDENTIFYING MAIN POINTS, SUPPORTING DETAIL AND OVERALL PURPOSE 10 MARKS FOR TRANSLATING PART OF THE TEXT INTO ENGLISH
DIRECTED WRITING DIRECTED WRITING 20 MARKS, SCALED BY SQA TO 15 MARKS (12.5% OF THE TOTAL MARK FOR COURSE DEVELOPMENT) CANDIDATES WRITE AN ESSAY IN THE PAST TENSE AND AT LEAST ONE OTHER TENSE (120-150 WORDS) DESCRIBING A VISIT MADE, OR AN EXPERIENCE HAD IN A FRENCH -SPEAKING COUNTRY. CANDIDATES WILL HAVE A CHOICE OF TWO SCENARIOS WHICH WILL BE ON TWO DIFFERENT CONTEXTS FROM SOCIETY, LEARNING. EMPLOYABILITY OR CULTURE (NOT COVERED IN THE READING AND LISTENING PAPERS) THE SCENARIO CONTAINS SIX RELATED BULLET POINTS. CANDIDATES MUST ADDRESS EACH BULLET POINT. THE FIRST BULLET POINT CONTAINS 2 PIECES OF INFORMATION. THE REMAINING FIVE BULLET POINTS EACH CONTAIN ONE PIECE OF INFORMATION
PAPER 2 : LISTENING 20 MARKS (SCALED BY SQA TO 30 = 25% OF THE FINAL GRADE) CANDIDATES MAY NOT USE A DICTIONARY PART A IS A MONOLOGUE(BETWEEN 1 AND 1 MINUTE LONG) 8 MARKS CANDIDATES ANSWER QUESTIONS IN ENGLISH PART B IS A DISCUSSION BETWEEN 2 SPEAKERS ON THE SAME CONTEXT AS THE MONOLOGUE . THIS IS BASED ON A CONTEXT WHICH IS NOT SAMPLED IN THE READING TEXT OR DIRECTED WRITING SCENARIO. THE QUESTIONS ARE IN ENGLISH AND ANSWERED IN ENGLISH 12 MARKS
PART 3 : TALKING ASSESSMENT 30 MARKS = 25% OF THE OVERALL MARKS FOR THE COURSE ASSESSMENT THE PERFORMANCE IS A DISCUSSION IN FRENCH BASED ON AT LEAST TWO OF THE FOLLOWING CONTEXTS: SOCIETY, LEARNING, EMPLOYABILITY, CULTURE THE CANDIDATE WILL NEED TO DEMONSTRATE DETAILED AND COMPLEX LANGUAGE AND MAINTAIN INTERACTION AS APPROPRIATE TO PURPOSE THE EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION IS MAINLY OF A FACTUAL NATURE AND ALSO INCLUDES IDEAS AND OPINIONS. CANDIDATES MAY ASK QUESTIONS WHERE APPROPRIATE DURING THE DISCUSSION. THE DISCUSSION LASTS 10 MINUTES CANDIDATES MAY USE BRIEF NOTES/AND OR VISUAL AIDS CANDIDATES MAY REFER TO UP TO 5 HEADINGS OF NOT MORE THAN 8 WORDS .
COURSE ASSESSMENT = WRITING ASSIGNMENT 20 MARKS (SCALED TO 15 BY SQA) = 12.5% OF FINAL GRADE THE ASSIGNMENT ALLOWS CANDIDATES TO PRODUCE A PIECE OF WRITING IN FRENCH BASED ON ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CONTEXTS, SOCIETY, LEARNING, EMPLOYABILTY, CULTURE CANDIDATES PRODUCE A PIECE OF WRITING(200-250 WORDS) USING DETAILED AND COMPLEX LANGUAGE CANDIDATES WILL NOT SEE THE ACTUAL STIMULUS UNTIL THE POINT OF ASSESSMENT CANDIDATES HAVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR REMEDIATION AND CONSOLIDATION OF THEIR WRITING. TEACHERS WILL PROVIDE FEEDBACK ON AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT VIA THE USE OF A WRITING CORRECTION CODE THE PIECE OF WRITING IS MAINLY OF A DISCURSIVE NATURE. CANDIDATES SHOULD WRITE IN A FOCUSED AND STRUCTURED WAY AND TO WRITE IN PARAGRAPHS
HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL STAY WELL ORGANISED NOTES & HANDOUTS ALL IN A FOLDER REVISE VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR REGULARLY THERE ARE 2 BIG GRAMMAR TESTS & WEEKLY VOCAB TESTS ATTEND SUPPORTED STUDY PREPARE WELL FOR THE TALKING ASSESSMENT - PRACTISE TALKING TO THE FLA AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE LISTEN TO & READ AS MUCH FRENCH / SPANISH AS POSSIBLE PODCASTS, RADIO, NEWSPAPERS, FILMS
