  2. WHAT IS A TRADE UNION?? The trade union came into being as an agent of workers and working class. Over the years workers have struggled hard to achieve an adequate measure of their protection against exploitation.   3. DEFINITION OF TRADE UNION A Trade Union has been defined as a continuous association of workers formed for the purpose of maintaining and improving their conditions of employment. Their aim is not merely to fight against the wage-cuts but also to fight for higher wages. A temporary organisation or a mere strike committee cannot be considered a trade union. It must be a continuous association. Trade union is an association of employees or employers or of independent workers. It is relatively formation of workers.   4. Trade (labour) unions are organisations of employees established to bargain with employers concerning wages, houses and conditions of employment. It is a body formed for common benefit by a group of workers who may be of the same trade. Generally, it is believed that unions tend to raise the wages of their members.   9. THE THIRD PHASE 1947 The third phase began with the emergence of independent India. The partition of the country affected the trade union movement particcularly in Punjab and Bengal.
