Tools For Solidarity Learning about Poverty
Would you rather meet Would you rather sit in a bath of your great-great-grandmother? baked beans? your great-great-grandchild? wriggly worms? yourself? stinging nettles? Would you rather people were not allowed to Would you rather live without your TV? be angry? your favourite outfit? be sad? money? be silly?
Would you rather buy Would you rather have a robot that could a book that could talk? do all your homework? tidy your bedroom? a carpet that could fly? eat all your vegetables? a bag of sweets that never empties? Would you rather be able to Would you rather live talk to trees? in the desert? talk to animals? on a sunny beach? talk to aliens? on a snowy mountain?
Would you rather Would you rather be the cleverest person in the world? read all the books ever written? the funniest person in the world? play all the video games ever made? the kindest person in the world? watch all the movies ever made? Who would you like to come to your party: Would you rather be chased by a burglar? an angry wasp? an alien? a grumpy fairy? a witch? a tickle monster?
What is poverty? What do we mean by being poor?

Character: David Age: 11 years old Where I live: small apartment in a poor area of New York Who I live with: my mother Parent s work: waitress and domestic cleaner Hobbies and/or motivations: playing basketball and studying history. I wish I had more time to play basketball but I need to help Mum at home because she works all the time.
Character: Abbo Age: 12 years old Where I live: small house with two rooms in Uganda Who I live with: my parents and my 5 siblings Parents work: farmers Hobbies and/or motivations: I wish I had enough food but sometimes we don t eat anything the whole day. I would like to go to school but I need to help my parents on the farm.
Character: Sophia Age: 15 years old Where I live: Germany Who I live with: my parents and my sister Parents work: My mum is a lawyer and my dad is a vet. Hobbies and/or motivations: I like to play sport so I joined a soccer team. I also like to go to the library to read books about animals because I want to be a vet, just like my dad.
Character: Angus Age: 13 years old Where I live: a farm in the Scottish highlands Who I live with: my parents Parents work: farmers Hobbies and/or motivations: The climatic conditions have hindered production and we face serious economic difficulties. I love going to the cinema but my parents said we can not afford it anymore.
Character: Niamh Age: 17 years old Where I live: a big house in Cork Who I live with: my parents and two siblings Parents work: My dad is a doctor and my mum teaches at a university. Hobbies and/or motivations: I look forward to going to university next year.
Character: Abasi Age: 14 years old Where I live: I am from Syria but now I live in a refugee camp because of the war. Who I live with: I sleep in the same room as lots of other people. Hobbies and/or motivations: I would like to have a home again and go to school with my friends.
